2023.05.29 16:50 FunTony11 LORE 3: HISTORY: PRE-OSTBOHEMII
PINNED COMMENT IS FOR LORE 4
2025 - Parliament elections in Czechia, replacing a liberal government with a far-right one. Some people had enough of both liberals and far-right parties. However a big problem happened with the far-right party that didn't happen before, and the problem was cut of diplomatic ties and isolation.
The party began doing classic far-right stuff - discrimination, corporatism, authoritarianism, etc... The biggest problem was the withdrawal from EU and NATO. Due to Czechia having a shitty economy, it was very very dependent on the EU. This caused a major recession, lots of stuff collapsed. The party saw this as an opportunity to get a more grip towards comple authoritarianism. The military also completely dissapeared, NATO stole every equipment it could before the withdrawal. For this, the party was now recieving wide criticism, but alot of people enjoyed the simple life and called towards complete isolation. Most people against this left the country in a deal, and then Czechia really became isolant.
Over the years, and the next election support for far-right, became so large, that the parliament was dissolved and everyone supported it. Most people politically became conservatist ultranationalists. The country didn't take an American, Russian or even a Chinese alliegance. It just became really closed. The good relations it had with Europe have now been ruined, including Poland, Slovakia...
2030 - Municipal elections in Czechia, now the only legal nation-scale party in Czechia, it only candidated in the big cities. Rest of the cities had independents, or small parties loyal to the far-right (at least on paper). In Dvůr Králové a new party won the third place. The party simply called 'Za Nové Královedvorsko! (For a new Dvůr Králové!)' promised a new age to Dvůr Králové, its popularity was because of it's public plans for the expansion of the city. Publicly the party was pro-government. But the party was actually anti-government, only party members knew this at this point. However it's plans attracted some people, and these people when they became party members were radicalized to be anti-government too. After the elections it got two mandates. But in 2031, the government officialy disbanded every political party and grabbing ultimate control. The party (still publicly pro-governemnt) now became an organization with a new goal.
Organization for Local Proudness was an organization active in Dvůr Králové region that aimed for proudness on the city-district level (Insted of being proud for Dvůr Králové, being proud for it's local districts for example Podhart, Zálabí). It attracted some people, reaching up to 100 members and gaining public knowledge. It even begun funding everything in the Dvůr Králové region. Gaining more respect from the public. When reaching 500 members, the organization radicalized everyone to be leftist. Basically becoming an underground organization, even still following the political program of 'Za Nové Královedvorsko!'. (Keep in mind, this still wasn't seperatism at this point).
Weapons became publicly accesible and easily avaliable to the public in Czechia. The organization built a weapon centre in Dvůr Králové, a museum, facility and more, so when it bought lots of weapon it wasn't suspicous. Now the situation is 500 people in a city of 12 000 people (maybe totally 700 active in public work and politics) wanting to take down a government, somehow this still was kept secret.

Hello all.
I decided to give Reddit a try since I don't find myself connecting with anyone on dating apps.
About me,
I’m 39, never married, no kids. About 5’10” and around 180lbs, average build. Brown hair, but bald with a beard. I’m a computer nerd and been into gaming for ages. I’m more of a woods person than a city one, and been recently riding my bike on the old railway trails in my area. But with that said I do prefer to stay at home than go out every night.
I vape but don’t smoke cigarettes and is 420 friendly. I want to start growing my own plants soon in my hydro setup, after growing jalapenos and some random herbs.
I am a person with a lot of love to give, and don’t mind clingy people who need attention. I have really been yearning to find that special someone lately after being single for a while now.
Im a very open minded non judgemental person, but I do have a feisty side, and dishonesty I won’t put up with.
For my goto for music and movies, I like industrial music, and anything scifi or comedy.
Though I do enjoy cheezy B Movies and anything independent.
I’m looking for a gal who shares the same interests, ideals, and hobbies. A fellow PC gamer who wants to play games together as a way of spending time with one another, or just hang out on Discord. While I prefer someone closer, I’m open to a long-distance relationship that turns into something that becomes in-person. I do need a sense of attraction to develop love, and I’m sure you do as well. So after exchanging a few messages i’ll want to exchange pictures so we both know who we are talking to lol
So feel free to shoot me a message, if it seems like we mesh well and feed off each other's energy, let's move it over to discord to take things further :)

2023.05.29 16:47 BeLLiSSiM0_ THC induced Psychosis or really bad OCD. Please respond.
Hello guys. 2 months ago a friend of mine played a joke on me by giving me a 98% HHC vape (milder form of THC) while telling me it is a CBD vape. I made a few huge vapes and I mean like 10 puffs but very big ones. After a few minutes I was in a severe Panic attack, which I experienced for a first time in my life. Brutal heartbeat , nausea, chills in my body, legs and hands numb. I asked him what he really gave me , but he kept insisting it is just cbd. I called my gf to come and pick me up. On the way home I experienced paranoia about this one friend giving me something which is not cbd on purpose and that he is doing it because he might be friend with a very bad person I was having problems with recently. But for the second part i was almost sure that is impossible. No hallucinations or any other form of paranoia/delusion. I’ve been having harm intrusive thoughts which scared me (the thought i might snap and act on them). The next morning i called him and he admitted about what he really gave me. After that I kept having panic attacks and disturbed sleep, zero appetite and dpdr for a few days. No hallucinations or delusions or strange thoughts except the one that gave me fear and panic - that i have broken my brain forever. I’ve had racing thoughts when falling asleep which were absolutely chaotic and irrational, making 0 sense and jumping rapidly from a topic to topic, but only when just falling asleep. If I opened my eyes and was fully awake, they immediately disappeared. I’ve read on google the day after the incident that there is connection between weed and schizo and that is what caused me extreme distress but I didn’t read any symptoms. The next 1-2 weeks things were getting better day after day and I decided I would do some online tests for schizo and read symptoms. After doing every single test I found I was immediately calmer , because I’ve never experienced even one symptom from the mentioned EVER. But I continued reassuring myself by reading and doing tests for the next 7-10 days, literally doing it all day. I was getting more and more concerned until I ended up in a new panic attack. I started constantly looking around and wondering if everything I saw or heard is real or am I hallucinating. Something with the corner of my eye or a momentary random sound. After a few days I decided I would swallow up my pride and start asking. Every time I’ve asked (hundreds of times) everyone else was seeing or hearing everything I did. So that wore off almost completely. Then the obsession with delusional thinking kicked in very hard. After everything I’ve read , all the examples of delusions that people have, I developed similar thought patterns. Some random neighbour would greet me with “hello” and i would think “wait, what if that person has some hidden meaning towards me in his mind?”. Which literally puts me in another anxiety attack, because I am terrified why would I consider such thing, why would even such a thought pass my mind as it is absolutely irrational. It’s been 2 months now. My sleep has greatly improved generally. The obsession comes and goes. Sometimes I will be happy and obsession free for days, laughing at my previous experiences and thinking it won’t come back. Then it comes back again for a few days causing me extreme distress. I lose my appetite again, lose motivation and enjoyment in life. In those days only very pleasurable activities with friends bring me out of this, sometimes completely and for hours I forget about it. I am almost 27 years old male. No family history of mental illnesses of any sort, no drug use of any sort, and most of all not a single similar experience of any sort my whole life. Quite the opposite. I was the most happy, motivated , cheerful and funny person in my circle. Except for a depression episode 12 years ago when I moved to a new city with my family, my life has been always very satisfying. 3 different psychologists told me that I can be sure I don’t have psychosis and it is GAD or ocd combined with medium depression. I’ve also went to a psychiatrist who didn’t quite have the time to listen to everything i wanted to say (for example the delusional thoughts) and he told me that nothing could happen from one time overdosing any drug. He pointed my age to be way above the age in which people get psychotic illnesses and said that I would have shown many signs of such much earlier in my life. I called him later that day for reassurance and he told me that he has more than 40 years of practice and is specialised in diagnosis of psychotic illnesses. He said he would have known if something isn’t right minutes after I’ve entered the room. He told me to remember this: “ i am absolutely and undoubtedly sure that the isn’t even a slightest chance of such thing”. This helped me get out of the circle for more than a week. And then I’ve read about prodrome and freaked out again.
What do you think guys? Anyone suffered or suffering from a similar situation? Any advices? I go to gym every day and see my friends all the time, i hate being alone. I started to regain some part of my motivation to work (much more to be regained as I am very motivated usually).

2023.05.29 16:46 undiscoveredmodel I (35M) had to cancel a date with a girl (28F) on Saturday due to a toothache. I think she’s pissed and I haven’t heard from her since.
Let me preface this by saying that I’m actually really interested in this girl and feel bad for having to cancel. She lives an hour and a half away and I was supposed to go to her city on Saturday to go out to dinnedrinks. Nearly all of the hotels were booked in her city due to two events that were going on, so I had to have my uncle pull some strings to get a room (I was just going to stay in her city that night instead of driving home). Long story short, I really wanted to hang out with this girl.
I’ve been having tooth issues since last week and went to the dentist Wednesday. They reared their ugly head again Friday night and I thought I could push through, but I couldn’t. I texted her in the morning and let her know I couldn’t make it and she responded saying not to worry about it and that she had friends in town that night, so she still had something to do. She also said “it’s fine” in the response back which I know very well means that things actually aren’t fine.
I haven’t heard from her since then. I know it’s only been two days, but my paranoid side is getting the best of me. I even sent her flowers and chocolate which are supposed to be delivered today and Wednesday to show her that I’m sorry.
I feel genuinely bad, but I actually do have a horrible toothache. The rough thing about this is that she lives far enough away where we can only meet up on weekends and I know she’s a busy girl. I’m afraid of her losing interest or thinking I’m lying. Would you be upset if you were her?
ETA: I met her at a sporting event a few weeks ago, so we have hung out once in person.

2023.05.29 16:41 kingchoco7 Is this a “good” mortgage co-sign opportunity?
Hi all, apologies in advance for the long post -
My mother has been in the process of searching for property in Houston for the last year and has finally found a 3b/3b house that she’d like to purchase near downtown Houston. In passing this week, she mentioned that she’d need me to be the primary signer on her mortgage - banks are hesitant to give her a 30-year fixed mortgage as she is in her mid 60s and she doesn’t generate income in the US.
Financially, my mom is comfortable and has been for as long as I can remember. She’s been retired for the last 10 years, and has a healthy financial trust and rental property from a foreign country that she’s been living off of. I don’t know exact figures, but I estimate that she has been able to pay herself $80k-$120k per year, and she lives a very frugal lifestyle.
I will be getting further details on the specifics regarding the mortgage later, but let’s use these assumptions for now: 1) Moms home will be ~$800k, with a ~$400k down payment being rolled over from a recent home sale. 2) My mom and I will be named on the title of the home. 3) She will be able to pay all expenses for the home on a monthly basis and has substantial savings. 4) She will be a tenant 9 months of the year, and expects to airbnb the home for 3 months of the year while she travels. 5) I expect to inherit part or the entire amount of equity in the home as part of her estate. This last point is key and to me is the value prop from my perspective of this arrangement.
Im in my mid 20s, have a TC of $145k, and rent an apartment in a HCOL city in the NE. No plans of buying a residential home in the near future, but I am planning on purchasing my first rental property in 2024. I have a relatively low overhead, no debt of any kind, and invest the majority of my after tax income.
Is it naive to view this situation as a rental property and a potentially good deal? My mom would be footing the down payment, paying the monthly mortgage (assuming continued good health, touchwood), and I may serve to gain substantial equity.
I’ll be getting additional details on the house details and my moms plan/expectations, but ahead of that conversation I wanted to get outside thoughts on pros/cons, as well as additional considerations to keep in mind before potentially be a co-signer, as I understand that general wisdom is that co-signing for family is often a bad idea. Also, I’ve read that I may lose out on some first home buyer incentives in the future that may be beneficial. In addition, my DTI ratio will be high after this house so I probably won’t be able to buy property for a while as a result.
Note: She is currently renting an apartment for ~$2k/month, so she will continue to rent should I reject co-signing. The $400k will continue to sit in a HYSA and earn ~4% interest.
Please let me know if I’m missing key information to include and I’d be happy to. Thanks for reading.

2023.05.29 16:41 ThrowRA023995832 Living with parents vs living with friends in the city
I'm a bit conflicted right now. I'm 23 years old and I make about 82k and currently stay with my parents in the suburbs. However, my friend is planning on moving into the city in September and is really pushing me to get an apartment with him. The rest of my other friends also live in the city as well. So here is where I am conflicted:
Living at Home: It has been fiscally amazing. I don't pay rent, don't pay for groceries, and I also don't have to cook. I get to max out my 401k. I am putting about 1k into my savings every month. I also have a great relationship with my parents and it is nice living with them. I know it will be harder to spend time with them in the future and I also enjoy having a bigger room in my home with more privacy. Living at home is financially the best decision no doubt. The only cons are complete isolation from friends since they're 1 hour away in the city. And also, the commute. I spend 2 hours on days I have to go into the office for travel and it is draining. I'm home by 6:30pm and by then I only have a couple hours to enjoy the day or do what I need to do. Also, when hanging with friends on weekends in the city, I hate having to drive back and having to stay sober for the most part.
Living with Friends: Now, living with friends is definitely the worse financial decision of the two. The thing that is making me consider is the cost of time and fleetingness of being young. I want to be able to experience what it's like living with friends in the city. Especially knowing that all of our paths will probably diverge very soon and we won't be able to have times like this again. I want to be able to hang out with them after a long day of work, or have people to go to the gym with, or even just be in an area with other young people I can meet. In the suburbs, it's also desolate and nobody in there early 20's is around. And honestly, I want to learn how to be an independent adult. But I just don't know if it's worth paying around $1k in rent, along with grocery shopping, as well as having to make time to cook food. And I guess it would be harder to get privacy living with friends, which is another con too. Both decisions are short-term and it would just define my next year. I believe by end of 2024 or early 2025, my plan is to move out regardless and find a new job. Any advice on what to do?
TLDR: Deciding whether to live with parents in the suburbs and save money on rent and food, but have to endure a 1-hour commute back and forth for work. And being in the boring suburbs. If I live with friends, I can't save as much money, but I can experience living in the city in my early 20s and spending more time with friends. Conflicted here.

2023.05.29 16:38 developmentwomens Women’s Rights in the MENA Region: Progress & Obstacles
| https://preview.redd.it/q3l3vcrjpt2b1.jpg?width=1536&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fdcca48838631e309ee844aeac6675fc808136f3 A Background to Women’s Rights in the MENA Region Gender equality is a fundamental human right and an imperative foundation which lays the groundwork for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world. The development of women’s rights in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region has seen much progress and obstacles over the past decade. However, the unequal status of women stands out as a particularly challenging problem.Following“International Women’s Day” last month, this article provides a snapshot of the development of women’s rights in the MENA region as of April 2023. MENA countries include Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen. The MENA region has a reputation for struggling with gender equality. Development of women's rights Therefore, this article focuses on this region. However, it is important to emphasize that the MENA region is not the only place women experience inequality. Gender inequality is also seen in Asia, Africa, Latin America, Europe, and North America. Undoubtedly, women continue to face discrimination and significant barriers to fully realizing their rights worldwide. Any Progress in the MENA Region? Governments are developing stronger laws and policies to support women’s rights.Significant laws, policies, and programming developments have focused on gender equality within the MENA region. Moreover, women’s representation in government has increased. Many countries in the region have established “national women’s machinery”. This machinery is used in government offices, departments, commissions, or ministries. All these provide government leadership and support in achieving gender equality.Furthermore, there have been notable improvements in education and health within gender-related indices. There has been an increase in specialized programming to support women’s rights and empowerment in this region.Women struggle to uphold their rights in places like Palestine. It is international human rights laws and conventions which are helping women in advocating for and strengthening their fight. Since the ratification of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) by the State of Palestine in March 2014, civil society organizations and women human rights defenders have publicly advocated for the implementation of the Convention and the passing of a Family Protection Bill, pending since the early 2000s, which would specifically address gender-based discrimination and violence. In turn, this will help to edge women closer towards gender equality in the occupied Palestinian territory. Women are increasing their role in civil society and advocating their rights Women are increasing their engagement in civil society. Women’s and youth feminist civil society has started to dominate the political scene in advocating for and securing gains. In Iran, millions of young women took to the street following Mahsa Amini’s death in police custody for improperly wearing her hijab. These women risked their lives to change the system. Many were arrested and beaten and now face the death penalty for speaking out. This demonstrates women’s power in standing up against authoritarian regimes and fighting oppression.Caption: Thousands walk to the cemetery of MashaAmini’s funeral in Iran supporting women’s rights in September 2022.The Iranian government is brutally repressing women’s voices who courageously stand up for their freedom. The UN has called Iran a “gender apartheid” on women.Women’s civil society actively engages internationally with the “Women’s Peace and Security” agenda. Remarkably, women activists have testified before the United Nations Security Council. The UN Women highlighted the gender impact of conflict and occupation on women’s rights. What Obstacles Hinder the Development of Women’s Rights in the MENA Region? Women face many inequalities within the MENA society, correlating them as second-class citizens with little to no protection from violence. The COVID-19 pandemic has compounded existing inequalities. Moreover, factors significantly reducing space for constructive civil society engagement with governments include ongoing conflict, the revival of extremist religious groups, and increased political turmoil. These international crises created many setbacks in passing long-term legal change. The 2022 global poverty update from the World Bank reports that the MENA region is the only place worldwide where the extreme poverty rate increased between 2010 and 2020. Poverty has a detrimental impact on women’s rights.Gender-based violence is also one of the main challenges facing women in the region today, with devastating effects on their health and well-being and their economic and civic participation.Women protest for the development of women's rights in the MENA region.Caption: Egyptian women in Cairo protest against violence against women [EPA].Read more: Female Genital Mutilation in Somalia Reflects Deep-Rooted Gender Inequality.A striking example of gender-based violence was in 2022 when the Israeli forces shot dead Al Jazeera’s journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in the occupied West Bank. Abu Akleh, a longtime TV correspondent for Al Jazeera Arabic, was killed on the 11th of May 2022 while covering Israeli army raids in Jenin in the northern occupied West Bank. Women have no right to nationality in the MENA region The MENA region has the highest concentration of gender-discriminatory nationality laws. An estimated 50% of the 25 countries in MENA deny women equal rights to pass nationality to their children.Algeria is the only country in the region with nationality laws upholding complete gender equality, including women’s right to confer nationality on their children and noncitizen spouse on an equal basis with men. Thus, gender discrimination in nationality laws is one of the primary causes of statelessness in the MENA region, in addition to causing several other human rights violations.Lebanon, Kuwait, and Qatar deny women the right to confer nationality to their children and spouses in all circumstances. Other States, including Bahrain, Jordan, Libya, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Syria and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), deny women the right to confer their nationality to children in most circumstances. Malnutrition in women and girls increases by 25% Malnutrition in women and girls increased by 25% in crisis-hit countries in the MENA region between 2020-2022. Over a billion women and adolescent girls are malnourished in the world. This has detrimental health, economic and well-being impacts. Most women and girls affected by this statistic live in the MENA region. Both local and global crises in 2023 could exacerbate the development of women and girls living there. Rising poverty and inequities increase the chances that people will turn to cheap, ultra-processed, unhealthy foods.ddressing malnutrition in women and girls is essential to reduce the gender health gap”Therefore, the world is making slow progress. Issues like soaring food prices, climate change and the lasting impact of the COVID-19 pandemic risk making the nutrition crisis an even more significant problem in 2023. Nutrition is a widely overlooked issue; coordinated access and policy intervention are urgently needed.Read more: Children’s Rights in Yemen Are Teetering on the Edge of A Catastrophe. The opinions and attitudes of citizens across the MENA region were recorded in the latest Arab Barometer survey from October 2021 to July 2022. This is the largest publically available survey published since the onset of COVID. Its results were shocking across 12 MENA countries, which collectively are home to 80 per cent of the citizen population in the Arab world. The findings give an unprecedented insight into the everyday lives of these citizens. submitted by developmentwomens to u/developmentwomens [link] [comments] |
2023.05.29 16:35 knavechild Take Action, New Zealand - EXIT THE W.H.O. To Preserve National and Personal Sovereignty
Take Action, New Zealand - EXIT THE W.H.O. To Preserve National and Personal Sovereignty https://inhere.salsalabs.org/NewZealandIHRExitWHO/index.html The Top 10 Reasons Why New Zealand Should #ExitTheWHO: 1. CONFLICTS OF INTEREST AND CORRUPTION: The WHO is infiltrated by Big Pharma, Big Money, and Big Foundations and has been corrupted by financial donations from corporations and non-governmental organizations which influence WHO policy in ways that benefit the corporations and the organizations through a money-laundering and influence-peddling scheme of massive proportions. The WHO follows the dictates of its so-called “relevant stakeholders” while ignoring the needs and desires of “We the People.”
2. MISGUIDED FOCUS ON VACCINES: Influenced by vaccine manufacturers and vaccine pushers such as GAVI and Bill Gates, the WHO has lost sight of its core purpose of promoting health and has overemphasized the use of “vaccines” which have not improved health, but have actually degraded the overall health of billions of people around the world. Best practices designed to improve health are ignored in favor of actions ultimately designed to profit Big Pharma.
3. BUREAUCRACY AND WASTE: The WHO is dominated by bureaucrats and technocrats that are beholden to big Pharma, not knowledgeable health professionals that are dedicated to caring for patients and helping them maintain and improve their health. The WHO wastes enormous amounts of money on salaries for their bloated staff and travel expenses to such a degree that actual health related programs are chronically underfunded.
4. FEAR-MONGERING: The WHO has sounded the alarm and wasted time, effort and money by declaring FAKE Public Health Emergencies of International Concern (PHEICs) such as Monkeypox and Swine flu (H1N1) while failing to act swiftly or effectively to address Ebola and COVID-19.
5. DANGEROUS RECOMMENDATIONS: The WHO has made horrible and corrupt recommendations in support of the expanded use of pharmaceutical drugs such as opiates that have been responsible for untold millions of unnecessary deaths.
6. FALSE MODEL OF HEALTH: The WHO is overly dependent upon the petro-chemical based pharmaceutical, medical, hospital industrial complex which practices allopathic medicine that is designed to alter and mask symptoms rather than actually improve health. The WHO does not offer a forum for clinical and scientific discussion or debate and clearly marginalizes natural healing modalities.
7. POWER GRAB: The WHO is blatantly seeking to increase its power by pursuing a legally-binding proposed “Pandemic Treaty” and proposed amendments to the International Health Regulations.
8. MISTAKES: The WHO has repeatedly demonstrated that it is absolutely unwilling and incapable of learning from its mistakes of the past and is destined to continue wasting money while providing horrible advice based on the corruptive influence of Big Pharma and Bill Gates.
9. OUT-OF-TOUCH: The delegates to the World Health Assembly are unelected, unaccountable, unknown to the people they purport to represent and completely out of touch with the needs and desires of the people of their respective nations.
10. SECRECY: The WHO operates in secrecy and lacks transparency. Far too much of what is done by the WHO remains hidden. What we know is horrible. What we don't know may be monstrous!
NOT ONLY THAT,... Amendments to the International Health Regulations (IHR) actually
REMOVE the following text from Article 3 of the existing IHR, 3rd edition (2005), which tells us that our human rights and freedoms are at risk:
“with full respect for the dignity, human rights and fundamental freedom of persons...” The World Health Organization has lost sight of its original purpose and is beyond repair.

2023.05.29 16:35 kingchoco7 “Good” Mortgage Co-sign Opportunity?
I’ll be getting additional details on the house details and my moms plan/expectations, but ahead of that conversation I wanted to get outside thoughts on pros/cons, as well as additional considerations to keep in mind before potentially being a co-signer, as I understand that general wisdom is that co-signing for family is often a bad idea. Also, I’ve read that I may lose out on some first time home buyer incentives in the future that may be beneficial.

2023.05.29 16:31 WarningGipsyDanger AIW for telling my husband I don’t know what he expects?
We bought a dishwasher when we moved in about 18 months ago. I told him I wanted X brand and gave many reasons why we should go with it. This brand is more expensive but it’s worth it and we had one in our previous home. He bought Y instead because it was less money and in his opinion a good deal, I tried to explain why it wasn’t but he didn’t care, it does the job - no he didn’t get a warranty, even though I encouraged him to.
About 8 months ago (maybe not even quite that) the motor and something else goes out on it. He calls someone to come out and it costs us close to $500 to repair it between parts and labor, essentially what it costs to buy it. I told my husband if that fixes the problem then it’s worth it but for the price we could just replace it.
The repair works for 91 days and stops again. They come out and determine it’s the same problem and they need to swap out a part and it’s weird that this happened. They replace the part over the course of a week and upon leaving it still doesn’t work.
My husband is calling these people and leaving me to interact with them. We both have jobs and work the same schedule even similar roles. It’s not like I’ve got free time any more than him to babysit the project but I am. I’m talking to repair guy and he says basically that X is full of cheap plastic and the brand is know to have problems.
I see money spent as time for them to come out and the cost of the hardware. They’re repairing an object, they can’t guarantee they can fix anything 100%. Even the repair guy said he had never had to replace the same part 3 times. I asked what our options were and he said buy a different brand - fine by me.
My husband is mad. He’s mad that he spent $500+ and it’s not fixed. That I should call and tell them that it’s still broken and we want compensation or it to work - I don’t even know what he expects? We paid them for their time and service. They warranty the part for a year but labor is good for 60 days.
I will call Tuesday to inquire about replacing the fan or what that may even cost but at this point I just want to buy the dishwasher I wanted - and no, not sprint out and buy it. I’m the one washing a household of 5 everything. I want something that is dependable and works.
My husband is mad at me because I’m not as angry at the repair company like he is and that I told him what did he expect? The repair guys said it was possible this wouldn’t be the end all he all. I told him not to buy this one but he did anyways. He said fine I’ll call them - but guess who’s going to be the one talking to them when they get here…
Am I wrong?

2023.05.29 16:30 kcr141 Searching For Common Threads 9: The Dark Forest
First Previous Next
Esen: When we landed at the primary research site, it was quiet at last. As I unstrapped myself and began to stand up, I started forming a list in my mind of all the tasks that would need to be completed.
As a first order of business, I walked over to the other side of the flight deck and began to inspect the hull breach. The hole that had been formed in the side of our ship was smooth on the inside. There was no evidence of any tearing or fragmenting, rather, the metal appeared to have been melted.
“You know,” I said, “I don’t think this was from kinetics fire. It looks like a laser did this.”
“It was a laser,” Tsavolyn replied. “I could see the beam.”
“I mean, it makes sense ‘cause we were moving away from them so quickly.”
At this, commander Taylor spoke up:
“That reminds me, did I hear you correctly when you said that those attackers were pulling twelve G’s?”
“Yeah,” I answered.
“They… that’s not… they can’t do that, that should be lethal!”
“I know,” I said. “Maybe those two ships never had a crew to begin with, however, they weren’t acting like they were computer controlled either. Honestly, I’m even more impressed they didn’t damage their warp drives or stall their reactors pulling those kinds of maneuvers.”
“Unfortunately, we’ll have to worry about that later,” commander Taylor responded, “right now, we need to get our own drive back in order.”
The three of us began to make our way down to the cargo hold. Once there, I found the nearest control panel and instructed the cargo bay doors to open. Sunlight flooded into the compartment.
The first thing that jumped out at me was that, unlike Earth’s spaceports, our landing pad seemed to be entirely makeshift. The bay doors led directly out onto a platform surrounded by guard rails and supported by a steel lattice structure. From there, a set of stairs connected the platform to the concrete floor below. Besides the platform in front of us, there was a concerning lack of service structures.
Then, I saw the rest of the world beyond the guard railing. The human-built structures gave way to rolling grassy hills with forests and mountains visible in the distance. From our vantage point, an abandoned alien city could be seen as well. The city was the reason for the outpost’s construction and was also the only obvious indicator that this was not Earth.
“It may not be quite what you’re used to,” commander Taylor said, “but according to the outpost’s inventory, everything you need should be here.”
I went over my mental checklist again before speaking:
“Alright. So… I need to swap out proto-segments three, seven, nine, fourteen, and… eighteen. We should probably start with three since that one’s kinda the whole reason we landed at all.”
“What is special about segment three?” Tsavolyn asked.
“Proto-segment three is
all the way inside of the warp drive’s primary ring,” I answered. “We experimented with other designs that were easier to service, but none could match the efficiency of our current approach. So unfortunately, in order to get to segments one through four, you have to partition them and extract the surrounding buffer. It takes special machines to do this because the drive becomes inoperable if the buffer leaks out.”
“Plus,” I added, “that stuff is toxic and it aerosolizes at standard pressure.”
“We didn’t pack our own equipment because it’s very heavy and we wanted to stay maneuverable in order to give ourselves the best chance of survival,” Taylor said plainly.
The three of us climbed down to the ground and began our preparations.
“I’m going to need some way to get up top to the primary ring,” I remarked.
“There should be an articulated lift here somewhere,” commander Taylor responded. “I can get that set up while you go find any other tools you might need.”
“Alright,” I said. The three of us parted, Tsavolyn traveling with Taylor while I headed in the opposite direction towards the edge of the spaceport. The researchers had set up a collection of temporary shelters and storage units. These structures were built out of flexible plastic supported by metal framework, they were more like habitats than buildings.
Once inside one of the shelters, it was obvious that the outpost was abandoned in a hurry. A variety of tools and electronics lay strewn about on top of a foldable table along with a half eaten bowl of oatmeal and a tablet.
Out of curiosity, I picked up the tablet and powered it on. When the screen lit up a dim orange color and displayed alien text, I realized that the device was of tynaksian design; evidence of the expedition’s cooperative nature.
After turning the tablet off, I set it back where I found it and then got to work. I managed to find a small tool bag and began packing it with everything I would need. I took a set of wrenches, a small flashlight, and a multitude of powered screwdrivers. I also packed a set of pliers along with extra bolts and wires in case any got lost or damaged. As I was searching through various storage drawers, I caught a glint of something gold and shiny. I reached in and produced a roll of PI tape. Remembering the hull breach on the flight deck, I packed the tape as well.
The next couple hours were spent tediously replacing each of the modified warp drive components. Accessing proto-segment three was a delicate process that involved attaching several cables and hoses to the drive’s primary ring, engaging multiple safety mechanisms, and then having commander Taylor activate the extraction machine from the ground.
After segment three, the rest were fairly straight forward. I would simply unbolt a panel somewhere, replace the proto-segment, and then put the panel back. When that was done, I went back inside the ship and used the PI tape to patch up the hole in the side of the flight deck. I also realized, upon further inspection, that the laser beam responsible for the hull breach had continued on its path and damaged one of the control interfaces.
To prevent any complications, I disconnected the damaged interface and then began a diagnostic on each of the components that had been replaced. After that, I headed back outside, finding commander Taylor and Tsavolyn admiring the alien landscape.
“I’m running a diagnostic on each segment,” I told them. “Once that’s done, we should be good to go!”
“Alright,” Taylor responded, “let me know when—”
As he spoke, the commander turned around to face me before stopping mid sentence.
After a moment of silence, I realized that Taylor was staring at something behind me. Cautiously, I turned around and followed his gaze.
An alien stared back at me. Their skin looked like it was composed of very small scales, so they definitely weren’t tynaksian. Looking directly at them, their scales were a crisp white color, however, when the sunlight hit them at an angle, they took on a faint violet hue. The alien wore a strange cyan-colored uniform inscribed with markings that were barely visible, and they seemed to be carrying a small crate full of electronics.
Since they weren’t tynaksian, that currently only left one option:
This was a raknin, probably one from the enemy fleet.
As soon as I had that realization, the alien dropped the crate they were holding and bolted in the opposite direction.
“Hey, wait!” commander Taylor shouted before taking off after them.
The raknin had already reached the other end of the launch pad by the time I recovered from my initial shock. I too began to chase after the commander and our alien visitor with Tsavolyn following close behind.
The concrete floor ended and our chase continued through the tall, lush grass. The ground grew steeper and before I knew it, the raknin and commander Taylor had both disappeared over the top of a hill.
Reaching the top of the hill myself revealed both a large valley as well as the alien’s intended destination. A raknin spacecraft sat tucked away at the bottom of the valley, concealed previously by the surrounding hills.
Taylor was gaining on the fleeing alien, and as they neared the bottom of the hill, the commander leapt forward. He collided with the raknin and the two of them tumbled the rest of the way down.
The alien quickly recovered and continued running. Commander Taylor took longer to get his bearings allowing me and Tsavolyn to catch up with him.
From there, it was a dead sprint to the spaceship.
When they reached the base of the rocket, the raknin scaled a ladder leading up to the cargo hold.
We weren’t far behind.
When I made my way to the top, officially boarding the alien craft, I was greeted with the sight of commander Taylor tackling the alien to the ground.
The alien tried to escape but couldn’t. As they struggled, the commander managed to look at me and shout:
“Tape! Tape! Give me the Tape!”
Tape? And then I remembered: I still had the polyimide tape!
I opened the tool bag and retrieved the roll of tape I had used to repair the hull breach. I tossed the roll to Taylor and then helped hold the raknin down while he restrained them.
Once the alien was immobile, I stood up and took a step backwards. As I did so, my hand collided with a hard surface and I cried out in pain.
I turned around to see what I had hit, but there was only empty space in front of me. Confused, I looked down at the back of my hand.
There were burn marks. Tsavolyn:
While Esen and Taylor were handling the fleeing raknin, I had the wherewithal to check if there were any other crewmates aboard the rocket.
I had been on a couple of raknin spacecraft before, but this one was different. It was like the whole interior had been emptied out and replaced with a strange metal lattice. This lattice was densely packed with hundreds of some kind of tetrahedron-shaped device. These devices covered every wall and ceiling. Even the floors were nothing more than a thin metal grating with more of the strange instrument underneath.
It looked like this vessel had been turned into some kind of detector array. I wasn’t sure what kind of array this was or why this had been done, but I figured the flight deck might hold some answers.
Besides us, the ship turned out to be empty; the raknin we encountered had flown here alone. When I reached the bridge, the first thing I noticed was a message displayed on several of the control interfaces warning of damage to the electrical systems.
I picked one of the control interfaces and sat down. As I was in the process of opening the diagnostics menu, Esen came in.
“Hey, do you think you can communicate with our new friend?”
“Probably,” I answered, “but I can’t guarantee that she’ll cooperate”
“I’m hoping they’re at least willing to tell us what they have down in the cargo hold,” He said.
“If you’re referring to all the devices on the walls, I can probably figure that out from here. I have some experience with these ships from before our falling out with the raknins. If I open the diagnostics interface, it will list every subsystem on the ship’s network.”
“Yeah, finding out what those are would also be helpful,” Esen said.
“Also? I thought the hold was otherwise empty.”
“Oh no,” Esen replied, “there’s definitely something in the middle of the cargo hold. We’re not sure what it is because it’s invisible.”
“Invisible?”
“Yeah,” he answered. “It’s surrounded by some kind of cloaking field. Also, the field isn’t safe to touch.”
Esen held up his hand revealing burn marks on both sides.
“Okay, that’s strange. Wait, you touched it twice?” I asked.
“Science has to be repeatable,” he said with a chuckle.
“Okay, I have the diagnostics menu up. It looks like they have… actually I’m not sure how to say this in English. It’s a type of particle, low mass, no charge, emitted during nuclear processes…”
“It’s not in the nucleus of atoms, right?” Esen asked.
“That’s right,” I answered.
“You’re probably thinking of neutrinos then.”
“That sounds correct,” I responded. “In that case, this ship has an array of neutrino detectors.”
“That’s probably what the things on the wall are for then,” Esen said.
“That would be my guess as well. Okay, this I don’t recognize.”
“What is it,” he asked.
“It’s a system listed as ‘frame capture,’ and I have no idea what that means.” I said.
“Could that have to do with our strange object?”
“Maybe?” I answered. “I’m not sure though because this is listed along with the warp drive and the drive complement.”
After a moment of contemplation, I selected ‘frame capture’ and ran a basic, full subsystem diagnostic.
After a few moments, I heard the ship’s reactor change output modes followed by the unmistakable rumble of the warp drive activating. This was confirmation that whatever the frame capture system was, it had something to do with the FTL drive, however that still left a lot of questions unanswered. I had never encountered it before, so it was either new technology or something that had been kept secret.
The diagnostic continued without issue until suddenly, a warning flashed on the screen. I didn’t have time to read it before the control interface went dead. The warp drive powered down along with the reactor leaving us in total silence.
“Hey!” commander Taylor shouted from below, “You two should get down here!”
Esen and I made our way down to the cargo hold. The spaces between the flight deck and the hold were dark now as, apparently, the entire spacecraft had lost power. Fortunately, the cargo bay doors were still open and thus the deck was illuminated with sunlight.
When we reached the hold, we both stopped in our tracks. Something was definitely different.
“Whatever you did caused it to become visible,” commander Taylor said.
He was right. In the center of the room sat a strange metallic object. It had a thick outline in the shape of a dodecahedron, however, the space in the middle was filled with a forest of thin metal strands. It was spiky, messy, and in some way, almost organic.
“Can you ask the raknin what this is?” Taylor asked.
I glanced over at the pilot thoroughly restrained with the shiny, high performance tape. She was staring at the now-visible object, and the fear in her eyes was contagious.
I looked at her and saw myself as a kid lost in the woods.
“Hey, are you alright?” the commander asked.
“Sorry, I’m fine,” I said. “I think the silence is getting to me again.”

2023.05.29 16:30 No_Soup_1180 Question on Toronto’s low salaries
Hello all,
My question is mainly for HRs but anyone can chime in. Why are salaries so low in Toronto when compared to similar cities around the world and to Toronto's high cost of living? What can be done to improve the situation?
For example, I work for an American company and I know salary bands in Toronto are even lower than in Houston, which is absolutely crazy. Having lived in Houston, cost of living is half of that in Toronto. You can buy almost a mansion in Houston suburbs for ~$600-700K.
I feel so bad because I know some of the best employees in my company are from Canada and they work more or equally as hard. There is definitely benefit of less work stress than in US but nothing more than that. Vacation days and all other perks are same. We also don't get higher vacation days like Europe as a tradeoff. My manager was kind enough to even take my salary rise request to CFO but it was turned down citing I am already getting better than market range in Toronto.
Do you all think this situation will improve given the ever increasing real estate cost in the city? It's hard to believe home prices are still going up when bank interest rates are more than 5-6%.
P.S: I am still way more happy than I was in Houston. I feel Toronto is way better city (better infrastructure, people, weather, activities, food, less crime, and most important - natural beauty).
