Hi. I just came back from a two week trip. I lived in Osaka and Tokyo some years ago so this trip was really meeting up with old friends again and also going for some new adventures.
It's so affordable now (if you have USD, which is strong against the yen right). I ate and drank so well! I went to a lot of izakaya, tried various local and regional specialties (unagi around Hamamatsu, akafuku in Ise, for example). All for waaaayyyyy cheaper than what I spend at home in Philly or NYC.
I also did a bit of biking. In Japan you often get a mamachari, which is like "your momma's chariot", or a bike your Mom would ride. With a basket. But hey they're fun for just cruising around! I've decided biking around the countryside is one of my favorite travel activities.
The main idea of this trip was:

Tokyo - catch up with friends and visit my favorite hang out places and restaurants.
Hamamatsu - I went to a beach at 7am, rented a bike, and biked around the Lake Hamana area.
I took three trains, two buses, and a ferry to Ise. Yes obviously it takes longer than shinkansen to Nagoya, but this is the scenic route lol.
Going to Ise was about Ise-jingu, of course.
One night in Nabari. I wanted to see Akame 48, where there are a bunch of waterfalls.
Nara - last time I was there was 19 years ago. I spent just one day doing the usual stuff in Nara-koen and two days doing a bunch of other things on the outskirts.
Osaka - it was great to be back, but mainly I was there to get shinkansen back to Tokyo.

Some more details:
Tokyo

I splurged and stayed at the Shiba Park Hotel. Shiba Park is near Hamamatsu-cho, which is easily accessible from Haneda via the monorail.
I went to a Kanda matsuri (festival) that involved people parading around omikoshi (portable shrine). They're really fun if you haven't seen. While there, by chance I came upon a kabuki theater and an usher convinced me to buy a ticket. Really colorful and dramatic.
I hit up some museum favorites such as the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum in Ebisu (I used to live across the street) and Ōta Memorial Museum of Art in Harajuku (all ukiyo-e, which I love).
Tip: if you are in Tokyo Station, have time to kill, and like art, there's a gallery near the north gate. Currently it's Japanese Paintings of Modern Osaka.

Hamamatsu

Probably not on most people's radar. I took a local train to Maisaka, walked to the ocean, walked around more, and found a bike rental place in Bentenjima.
Biked up to Hamanako Garden Park. It's all about flowers. Then biked farther up to Kanzanji-cho and ate some delicious unagi (eel).
The city is not super exciting but the Museum of Musical Instruments is really cool. They have a room with instruments you can rock out on. I banged on a djembe and plucked a koto.
As part of the scenic route to Ise, I took trains and buses out to Irago, then ferry across to Toba, and local Kintetsu train up to Ise.

Ise

Stayed in a ryokan near the train station. The main thing here is Ise-jingu, the most sacred shrine in Japan, the holiest of holies. Took advantage of lingering jet lag to wake up early and get in at 6am. It opens at 5!
The early morning hours are great. The main strip leading up to Geku wasn't that crowded even in the afternoon, although the main strip outside Naiku - okage yokocho - started to get busy after 9am.

Nabari

A small town in Mie-ken. I had always heard about Akame 48, where there are supposedly 48 waterfalls. The day was totally rained out. I took a local train and then bus to the visitors center but the rain wasn't letting up. I had a long chat with a friendly young Japanese guy who worked there. He doesn't see many visitors lately so I think he was glad for the opportunity to chat.

Nara

Stayed at a guest house near Nara-machi. This area is so cool - some tourists visit but still very local. Great for strolling around and checking out the shops. I did the usual Nara Park stuff for one day - Daibutsu, Nara National Museum, etc.
I rented a bike and headed out to Toshodai-ji and Yakushi-ji. It's a slight trek but there's a small river you can bike along which was cool.
I tried and failed to finish the yama-no-be-no-michi ("mountain area path"), as detailed in the LP book. I started too late and it was too hot. There are sign posts here and there but notably lacking where there are some forks in the road. You start from Tenri station and takes at least 30 minutes walking just to get to the start of the trail. Better planning next time.

Osaka

Stayed at APA Hotel in Umeda, rented a bike and went out to the aquarium. That's a bit of a slog but still worth it. At night walked around the usual places like Shinsaibashi, Ame-mura, etc.
I had time to kill before catching the shinkansen back to Tokyo so I rented a bike from the Shin-Osaka station and biked along the Yodo River. It's so nice - wide paths and great scenery.
Tip: I was reminded of how confusing it is to navigate Umeda on the street. Don't bother. If you have to find a station or something, go underground and follow the signs!

Some expenses (USD):

Airfare: $1500
Hotel: $1200
Food and drink: $700, which is simply amazing. And I ate so well!
Transportation: $325
Various activities: $300

My takeaway: after traveling in many places, I continue to find that some of the best experiences are those unplanned. Any trip requires plans obviously, but with a little luck and a traveler's intuition, I'm getting better at arriving at those fun spontaneous moments.

Here's my report for the southbound Texas Eagle this past Saturday. I boarded in Chicago and disembarked in Alton, IL. First some notes about Chicago Union Station. For all coach passengers Amtrak uses the Great Hall as waiting room space. It's a great space but oddly enough they could use more seating. While entering the great hall there was a sign saying Train 21 Texas Eagle Passengers Check In. I checked in and they gave me a seat check with ALN written on it and told me to get on the train at Door 1. This office closed about 45 minutes before the train departed and I saw many on board without seat checks. They called us all about 20 minutes before departure, lined us all up and marched us down to the track where we boarded. There were signs (Door 1,2,3,4) and attendants at each car door asking us our destinations. Looked to be a five car train, three coaches, diner, and sleeper at the front behind a GE loco. Door 1 was the last car, a nice Superliner coach. All the short haul St. Louis and Illinois passengers were in the last coach. The car was about 75% full. I didn't have a seatmate but many did. I grabbed the last seat on the left side as I wanted to look out the rear window en route. A fateful decision.
Boarding at CUS
We left right on the advertised and headed south. No delays at 21st st. or Brighton Park, thankfully. On time at Joliet with a BNSF stack train racing us the last mile into the station. But as we accelerated past 80mph south of Joliet the wind began to whistle around the rear door. It was annoying. Noise cancelling headphones made it bearable, but it was enough that myself and a few others tried messing with the rear door to stop it. Nothing much worked. As much as I enjoyed looking out the back at 100mph across the Illinois prairie, the whistle made sitting in the last seat less than optimum. While the Amfleet/Horizon/Venture equipped corridor trains can hit 110, Superliners are limited to 100. The ride was nice and smooth though and I got the sense that we could have gone faster if allowed.

We were right on the advertised until Lincoln. We had to wait a few minutes for a northbound UP stack train and were 5 minutes late into Lincoln. We met the northbound River Runner just north of Springfield which made us about 10 minutes late into Springfield. Made up a little time and were 6 minutes late into Alton. The train arrived in St. Louis on time. I snagged a beer and some chips from the dinecafe and service was fine. I do miss the observation/lounge car and hope it eventually returns to the Eagle.

Here's a pro tip for those thinking of using the very nice Alton, IL station. Parking is a pay to park gated lot. The rate is $8/day or $35 for a lost ticket. I was in Chicago for two weeks. My car was just fine and my "lost" ticket meant I only paid the rough equivalent of 4 days. The parking lot also miraculously healed my 22 year old car. I had a check engine light on when I pulled in back on May 15th, and the light was off when I pulled out on Saturday!
All in all a nice trip.

2023.05.29 15:52 Turbulent-Egg-3824 I'm constantly stiff and fighting plantar fasciitis

So I'm 43 and I noticed once I hit about 40, I started REALLY getting stiff in my feet, legs, buttocks, and hips. Some of it is plantar fasciitis related - I had a bad flare up during the pandemic and basically hobbled for two years. I do a lot of things for stiffness but it seems like it's getting worse. Basically it feels like I have wires running from my hips to my feet that are pulled tight. The plantar fasciitis comes and goes and some days is worse than others.
This is all the stuff I do to try to combat the stiffness:
- chiropractic care
- foam rolling and pressure ball rolling - I have a special spikey ball for my feet
- lots and lots of stretching to the point at times I feel overstretched
- turmeric supplements and I try to eat a lot of anti inflammatory foods
- regular exercise (I swim and lift weights a lot)
- new mattress
- foot elevated cushion at my desk to relieve pressure off my hips while sitting
I've tried yoga several times but I have a lot of migraines and unfortunately too many of the downward dog/chaturanga poses where I am leaning a lot of body weight on my arms can really cause migraines to flare up. There was at least twice where I was doing yoga and certain poses caused a lightning bolt of pain to shoot through my head so I'm nervous about yoga.
I probably need to add massage in but it's so expensive! And I don't think there are any local massage schools where I could get a discount.
We have a hot tub at our gym - I've thought about using it more to see if it helps.
I made a commitment to really try to tackle the stiffness this summer. I'm so sick of dealing with it! Anyone have any suggestions?

As the episode resumed to the heat of midday, the camera panned down from the sun and on to Topher and Ezekiel as they stalked through the savanna.
Topher stopped both of them suddenly. "Check this out," The camera features human footprints on the ground. "Those are human footprints."
"I can even see some drool," Ezekiel pointed out the specks of drool.
"That must mean Ezekiel Clone," Topher deduced, and they continued moving forward and holding out their slingshots.
"Remember, we keep calm," Ezekiel told Topher after they stopped, their bodies starting to descend.
"Right. All we have to do is set up a trap that'll lure him in," Topher claimed.
"That's a good idea, amigo," Ezekiel agreed before looking down. "What the? Uh-oh."
The scene zoomed out to show the duo sinking in quicksand. "Quicksand?" Topher realized.
"Help!" they cried out.

"How are we supposed to find that alien?" Owen asked the girls as they stalked through the savanna with their slingshots ready. He turned around and backed into a bush, only to hit something almost immediately. He slowly turned around to look, and his eyes went wide and the camera zoomed out as he realized he'd just bumped into a rhino's butt.
The camera panned to the animal's head as it looked backwards and snorted, and the focus returned to Owen as he screamed and took off, knocking Eva and Izzy out of the way. The rhino's viewpoint was shown, and in its eyes, Owen zipped through the savanna Road Runner style.
Izzy and Eva got up from the collision. "I am so going to kill Owen for that!" Eva declared.
"Save it for when we find him," Izzy said before they ran to locate Owen.
Meanwhile, Owen was screaming his lungs out and running until he bumped into someone and fell down. He groaned while opening his eyes, and when he saw that it was Mal he crashed into, he yelped and got up.
"What is the matter with you!?" Mal scowled in Owen's direction.
"A rhino chased me away," Owen stammered. "What about you?"
"Same thing, but with a lion instead of a rhino!" Mal growled.
"I didn't mean to run into you," Owen apologized.
"And I didn't mean to do this!" Mal took hold of Owen and hurled him up into a nearby tree. Owen hit his head on a branch, and he held onto it for safety.
"That was on purpose!" Owen confronted him, but screamed for his life.
"Maybe that'll teach you a lesson for nearly killing me, tubby!" Mal mocked him.

The footage returned to Ezekiel and Topher stuck in quicksand still, Ezekiel holding out a stick.
"I don't want to die in quicksand," Topher moped. "I prefer a quick death."
"Be quiet and look!" Ezekiel hushed the junior Chris when he heard the bushes rustle and Ezekiel Clone hopped out.
"Ezekiel Two. Over here," Ezekiel waved the stick in front of his clone's face, to which he snarled and bit on.
"You've got it," Ezekiel said when the feral clone dragged him and Topher out of the sand, Topher holding on to Ezekiel. "We're nearly out."
The boys were soon out of the quicksand. An antelope was heard off-screen, and as it ran past, Ezekiel Clone growled and went off to chase the animal.
"Shoot him, Ezekiel! Now!" Topher ordered. Ezekiel stood up and readied his slingshot. He shot the ball, but rather than hit the clone, it hit the intern holding a camera and knocked him to sleep, much to their disappointment.

The scene returned to Mal and Owen. Owen was still hanging on to the branch, but Mal was lying by the tree and whistling 'In the Hall of the Mountain King.'
Izzy and Eva arrived at last, and noticed Owen's plight. "What did you do to Owen, Mal?" Izzy squinted her eyes at Mal.
"I just gave him a little boost up that tree," Mal admitted.
"He did this to me because I ran into him by accident," Owen said.
"You are really petty," Eva told the troublemaker as Izzy stood next to the tree. Izzy kicked the tree hard, and it made Owen let go of the branch, but Eva was able to catch him in her arms.
"Call me whatever you want, but I just found some alien tracks," Mal smiled at the footprints on the ground and followed them. "Enjoy being put up for elimination!"
"Not if we beat you to it. Follow him!" Izzy commanded Owen and Eva, who obeyed willingly.

Back with Ezekiel and Topher, they were following the footprints until they heard the bushes rustle.
"Did you hear that?" Ezekiel asked and the bushes rustled harder.
"It must be your clone," Topher guessed and they pulled the slingshots. "Ready your tranq balls. On three. One, two, three!"
They ran screaming, and the shot cut to the bushes to reveal Mal, Eva, Izzy, and Owen coming out screaming and holding their slingshots. Topher and Ezekiel shot their balls, and the other four did the same.
One by one, the six were shown getting hit in separate shots. Owen, Mal, Topher, Ezekiel, Eva, and Izzy. A big cloud overtook the scene and vaporized to show the contestants out cold with their goggles lying on the floor.
The music note icon promptly appeared in the top-left corner of the screen, accompanied by its usual ding.
"Iiiiiit's song time!" Chris announced from off-screen, the camera panning right to show him and Chef in a jeep a couple yards away. "Hello?"
The camera was suddenly filled with darkness. "Hey!" Chris shouted as an eye opened to show Chris looking down. "Anyone in there?" The scene showed that Chris was prying Mal's eye open. "What do you prefer? Dynamite or TNT?"
"Dynamite!" Mal answered the question partly awakened.
Chris focused on the contestants lying on the ground. "Half an hour of you guys sleeping?! Oh yeah, that's gonna be great for ratings," he said cynically. "I want a song, pronto! No matter where the tranq balls hit you and how "groggy" you might be. You will be eliminated if you do not sing at least once! Now sing!"

[The African drumbeat that played from earlier started the song as Chris left and the camera panned down to Mal.]
"What a sickening day on the Serengeti! I just feel like kicking a pup!"
[Mal started the first line.]
"I'll find that clone and win this game! As soon as my leg wakes up!"
[As he sang, the camera focused on his legs not waking up and laying still.]
"You ditched us and went alone! You failed, and I find that pathetic!"
[Topher sang, his face against the ground.]
"We teamed up and almost had the clone! I wish we were a bit more athletic!"
[Ezekiel sang next while on his arms, adding "Really, we were that close!".]
"Almost, doesn't count to me! You didn't catch him, that's all!"
[Eva raised her head up and sang their way, turning her head to see Izzy crawl up to her.]
"To be fair, we didn't fare well! But at least we have our balls!
[Izzy sang next. "Tranq balls, I mean," she added.]
Owen stood on his feet, wobbling his body back and forth. "I should sing or I'll get kicked out. There's something I wanna say. Rhinos…and…lions…are really scary. My body…just…feels…like…resting!" He went back to sleep once more.
[Mal was focused on again, and he was attempting to get up.]
"What a sickening day on the Serengeti! I just feel like kicking a pup!"
[Mal stood on his two feet and noticed them bending over.]
"I'll find that clone and win this game! As soon as my leg wakes up!"
[His knees collapsed to the floor and made him bend.]
"My head!"
[Eva was holding her head with one hand.]
"My hand!"
[Ezekiel rubbed his hands together.]
"My arm!"
[Izzy flexed her arms to see if they're stable.]
"My face!"
[Topher mumbled groggily.]
"Wake uuuuuuuuuuuuuupppp!"
[Eva and Izzy sang together.]
"Wake uuuuuuuuuuuuuupppp!"
[Ezekiel and Topher sang the last line of the song together.]

The shot immediately cut over to Chris and Chef. "Somebody better catch the clone fast 'cause the plane is taking off in exactly one hour, with or without you," he told the contestants, five of them standing still while Owen rested still.
Chris pinched his nose, then turned to Chef. "Man, you are ripe! But, you wanna watch the tranq ball massacre on the widescreen?" he asked.
Chef pressed down on the gas pedal and sped off, but as Chris had been standing he quickly fell off the jeep.
"Hey!" Chris called out. "Get back here! AND STAY AWAY FROM MY HOT TUB!" he yelled as he ran off after his assistant.
Eva heard the sound of snoring, and it prompted her to make her way towards Owen and kick his side, jolting him awake.
"I didn't eat the strawberry cupcakes at the bake sale!" Owen shouted. "Oh, hi Eva."
"I'm giving you one more chance," Eva warned Owen. "If you ditch me and Izzy again, you're on your own from then on!"
"I won't do it again. I swear!" Owen pledged.
"You two were right about me going alone," Mal said and strolled towards Topher and Ezekiel. "I'll work with you now."
"Now you're reconsidering your plan," Ezekiel snorted. "And what makes you think I'd assist you after you tricked Sadie and got her eliminated?"
"That girl was expandable, and I didn't want to deal with any couples left in the game," Mal explained.
"Even if they're weak-looking and easy to beat in a contest?" Topher asked.
"I'd rather take on a powerhouse than an oblivious fool anyday, anytime," Mal said proudly.
"Temporarily. We'll work together temporarily for this portion of the challenge," Topher sighed.
"That's all I need. Now here's what we're going to do," Mal got the prairie boy and the junior Chris in a huddle and whispered their plan.
Confessional: Mal
"As you saw earlier, I encountered a lion while I was by myself earlier. Having allies by your side is necessary at a time like this," Mal claimed. "Allies that are easy to shove in front of a dangerous animal and let them be devoured while I protect my life!"
Confessional Ends
The scene flashed forward yet again, this time showing Eva, Izzy, and Owen as they walked through the plains.
"I'll forgive you for leaving us behind this fast because I love you," Izzy said to Owen. "Next time won't be so easy."
"I already talked to him about that!" Eva reassured her. "You can lay off, Izzy."
"I just wanted to let him know, Eva," Izzy replied.
Owen sighed. "I'm sorry for being so cowardly. I'm too young to die, sure, but I can't ignore lives as well, especially if they're my friends." A rustling was heard just before he tripped and fell down with a cry of "Whoa!"
The camera pulled back to show Owen had fallen in a bush that was littered with red berries, with red stains all over him. "P.U. These berries are as smelly as my underwear during laundry day," he winced.
"It seems like you fell in a patch of Serengeti blood berries," Izzy told him. "They are a sight to see, but their juice smells just like fresh blood.
"I said sorry for leaving you with that rhino," Owen wailed.
"I didn't push you into that bush. You tripped and fell yourself," Eva said.
"Now I have to go wash off these blood berries," Owen moaned as he stood up.

The scene moved to Owen at the edge of a pond, covered in red stains. "I'd rather be covered in strawberry jam than this," he complained as he peered into the water. A rustling was heard nearby.
He paused for a moment, and looked around. "What was that?" he asked before Ezekiel Clone showed up and sniffed the air.
He perked up and the camera cut briefly to the still berry-covered Owen washing up then back to him. The clone took the opportunity and launched himself at the fun guy.
The shot cut to Mal, Topher, and Ezekiel as they arrived on the scene. "This is simply entertaining," Mal said happily over the sounds of a violent and one-sided scuffle between Owen and Ezekiel Clone.
"I'm going to shoot if you two are just going to stand there like statues," Ezekiel said impatiently.
"Someone help me!" Owen yelled.
"Help is on the way! Eva shouted as she and Izzy arrived in time. The three boys got distracted by their arrival, and Eva wasted no time taking out her slingshot and tranquilizer ball.
A close-up was shown of Eva's slingshot as the tranq ball was loaded and drawn back, and the shot moved to show Owen trying his best to keep Ezekiel Clone from punching his face.
The shot came, and immediately knocked Owen and Ezekiel Clone into a deep sleep.
"We did it! We stopped that alien!" Izzy shouted to her friend.
"Technically, I was the one who put that thing to sleep, but sure, you can leech off my success," Eva said.
Chris and Chef returned in the jeep. "Congrats, Eva. You are on your way to first class!" Chris announced.
"I would've shot that clone if I didn't lose my balls on the way here," Topher claimed.
"Whatever you say!" Chris said with a smile. "Now quick. Grab Owen and let's get the heck out of Africa before that thing wakes up!"

The footage skipped ahead one more time to the Total Drama Jumbo Jet as it took off from the Serengeti plains. The camera zoomed in to the top of the fuselage between the wings, Ezekiel Clone pulling himself up before prying off a panel and crawling in through the opening.
Confessional: Mal
"Looks like it's time for me to pack my bags today since I'm the one going home," Mal glumly said, but quickly smiled in satisfaction. "Or it would be if I hadn't suddenly found a loophole through all this."
Confessional Ends
A flash took the scene to the elimination chamber, where Chris was standing in the middle of the room with all six contestants. "Mmm, tension-y!" he taunted, holding out the stack of passports.
"Alrighty then, one vote for Owen. And, the lucky loser with five votes is...," Chris finally said, reading the last passport with a devilish smirk as he paused for further effect.
"Mal."
"Serves you right!" Eva smirked.
"See you never, Mal!" Izzy taunted him.
"So this is where my journey ends…" Mal scowled at the pleased faces of the contestants.
"I'd agree with that, but I have to say otherwise this time around, 'cause Mal is not the one going home tonight!" Chris announced.
"Are you kidding me?" Ezekiel yelled. "He got the most votes out of all of us!"
"That is true," Chris explained, "but I remember telling all of you to sing earlier. You did, but it seems one person broke that rule. And I specifically said that you'll be eliminated if you don't sing, so Owen, here's your parachute!"
The teens, except for Mal, gasped as Owen was given his parachute.
"You're implementing this rule now of all times?" Topher protested. "Some of us don't even sing the songs in every episode."
"True, but this time, I was placing the rule on everybody, not just a select few," Chris said.
"It is what it is," Owen sighed.
"Don't be so down. You're better than this," Izzy told him. "And you're not getting evacuated this time.
"That does make me feel a bit better," Owen smiled again. "And thankfully, Mal has been exposed to the public."
"Just one more thing before you go!" Izzy jumped into Owen's arms and they began to kiss each other.
"Ugh. This is what I wanted to avoid," Mal reacted with disgust.
Owen and Izzy finished their kiss and Izzy got off of Owen. "If you didn't know it yet, we're now boyfriend and girlfriend," Izzy reminded the funniest guy around.
"I'll miss you, but just know I'll be watching you make the finale," Owen said to Izzy and made his jump…only to get stuck in the exit. "Could somebody push me out please?"
The camera cut to the outside of the plane, and Owen could be seen falling out of the open door.
"I'm gonna miss that guy," Chris said idly as the shot cut back inside to show the host staring out of the door. "Now, Eva," the host asked as he turned back around. "Who you bringing to the big leagues?"
"It's a decision I'll regret," Eva said while Izzy smiled expectantly next to her. "But I'll have to choose... Topher."
"WHAT?!" Topher and the others reacted.
Confessional: Eva
"Izzy's my companion, but I couldn't let her be in first class for the third time in a row or her head would be overinflated with arrogance. If I bring Topher over, he could give me tips on how to stop Mal for good," Eva clarified.
Confessional: Mal
"They might miss the big boy, but getting rid of Owen for the second time was like scraping gum off my shoe," Matthew smirked. "A bit sticky, but oh so satisfying. I'll have Chris's rule to thank for that."
Without warning, the confessional door swung open and Chris leaned in. "Things are getting cra-zy!" he told the camera with an excited grin, the series' capstone theme playing in the background. "Thirteen down and only five remain," he continued as Mal scowled. "Who will almost die next? Find out right here, on Total! Drama! World Tour!"
He lingered in the confessional as the music ended, and finally noticed Mal. "Whaaaat?"

The clip opened up to a shot of Owen parachuting down. "I wanted to sing, but I was too tired to do so. It wasn't my fault."
"Like my other elimination, I was eliminated irregularly instead of just getting the most votes. I think that's lame," he admitted sadly. "On the bright side, I get to keep my brain and me and Izzy are sitting in a tree!" Owen sang. "K.I.S.S.-"
He trailed off while drifting down, eventually landing in the quicksand...right next to a lion. They were both sinking, but it didn't erase the fear in Owen's face and the viciousness in the lion's.
"S.O.S.! S.O.S.!" he told the camera as his parachute covered him completely. The lion roared heavily, and Owen started to scream for his life.

My daughter turned down a travel team spot ( age advanced) to play with her friends and is learning a tough lesson in rec ball.
Tournament this weekend, last game of the day… fielders are straight legged and picking daisy’s. My daughter is pitching and fielders are missing easy outs, It’s rec ball and errors happen. My daughter however comes off in tears. Teams quiet on the bench, coaches quiet and my kid is pissed.
I think her frustration seems like it’s with the players but once the dust settles I can see that she’s mad that the coaches are watching everyone stand around.
She ultimately wants to leave the team because coach visited our hotel room and tells her everyone is hot and tired and trying their best. My daughter calmly points out that watching balls roll by isn’t trying and that we knew what this tourney was and should have been prepared for 3 games.
she’s absolutely done with the coaches who will coach her travel team in a few weeks, doesn’t want to play for them. She thinks “ It’s rec” isn’t a good excuse because the kids won’t learn if they aren’t told about mistakes.
Do I make her stick it out for the team?
I’m torn, we’re putting her friends in a tough position. The coaches are not taking an active coaching role so I also understand her frustration.

F (42) OMAD 5’4” SW 199, CW 167. Started IF Jan of this year.
Hey everyone I just need to vent because I’m crying at the gym right now. I hurt my hip a couple of weeks ago running. It was misdiagnosed initially as a IT band issue and so everything I was doing for it was wrong.
Last night I was playing with my kids and lightly kicked a soccer ball to my 5 y old and my hip popped I got a searing pain and just collapsed. I went back to urgent care and got a new diagnosis of trochanteric bursitis.
Look, I know it’s not cancer- but a big part of my journey this year has been fitness. I have been getting up at 430 4-5 days a week working out, personal trainer twice a week, walking or biking to work, etc etc. Move move move. I had really really enjoyed running again.
And now the list of things I can do is like- nothing. Lift weights- but just upper body really…kinda- lower body is really limited.
Anyway I know there are ways around it but now it’s a lot more complicated.
I just tried to go for a swim and couldn’t even do that so now I’m crying in the hot tub at the local gym. Real good look.

Years ago my wife and I bought our first mattress together. A Sealy (or serta) tempurpedic style memory foam bet with cooling and a fully adjustable base. We spent years paying that thing off. The return policy was 90 days and apparently we each spent the full 90 thinking the other loved it so said nothing about our complaints (our communication has since improved drastically :) ). Turns out our backs hurt and we slept in what felt like a pool of sweat. No combinations of sheets or toppers or anything could cool us off. We kept the bed out of anger at our selves because of the price for years.
We upgraded to a split king while living overseas and got a fairly firm coil and spring mattress that had a softer and harder side. I think the quality is decent but we have both found it to be too firm regardless. We out a cooling serta foam topper on and it found that too hot as well.
At this point I think our mattress is fine, but we love every soft pillow top mattress we sleep at whenever we end up in a hotel. We find they are not hot sleeping and they are the right mix of support and comfort.
How do we get that? I've been looking at featherbeds and wool toppers to place on the mattress but have no idea what's junk and what's good.
Looking for any kinds of suggestions. We are both about 40 pounds overweight, so not fit as fiddles. Wife is a stomach and side sleeper and I'm back and side. Both have sore backs frequently.

2023.05.29 14:33 Defiance42 Japan Trip Report: Keeping Strictly Kosher in Japan & More!

Tokyo-Lake Kawaguchiko-Kyoto-Osaka

The trip was my wife and I (upper 20s/lower 30s) for 10 days (not including 2 flight days) in May just after the end of Golden Week. It was our first trip to Japan and we had an amazing time! We did a lot of the standard tourist activities, but our perspective as kosher-observant travelers is a bit more unique so I figured I'd start the post with it. Feel free to skip past that section if it doesn't interest you.
Keeping Kosher and Sabbath Observance in Japan

While there are a decent number of vegetarian/vegan (which some kosher-observant people would be comfortable eating at, though we were not) and a small number of Halal restaurants in Japan, kosher-certified establishments are basically non-existent. The Tokyo Chabad in Minato does run a kosher-certified restaurant called Chana's Place (they deliver as well) and some of the other local Jewish communities also have prepared meals you can pick up or have delivered to you. We didn't really take advantage of any of these so I can't personally vouch for them though.
Every hotel and ryokan we stayed in had mini fridges as well as electric water kettles, which we relied on heavily to prepare food. We usually mixed some couscous or other easily cooked grain we brought with us along with some locally bought produce in a food thermos for hot meals (the daikon are so big, just half of one lasted us for days). Seasoned kosher travelers will likely have their own strategies, though if you can, staying somewhere with a kitchen will definitely expand your meal options. We had a pretty action-packed schedule, so we didn't opt for this this time, but if we ever go back to Japan, we'll likely make sure we're staying places with kitchens if possible.
Though we couldn't eat almost any of it, the food in Japan all looks and smells amazing (with the possible exception of some of the more exotic seafood). The smells wafting from the bakeries were absolutely heavenly. If you're kosher observant and traveling in Japan: be prepared for some major food FOMO. Salmon sashimi was one of the only local foods that fit our kosher diets, and the sashimi I got from one of the stands in Nishiki market was absolutely delicious.
We were only in Japan for one Saturday and spent Shabbat (Sabbath) near the Tokyo Chabad in Minato. Prayers and meals at the Chabad were a really wonderful experience, with a lively and jovial atmosphere and lots of different Jewish people who were visiting (or living in) Tokyo for a variety of reasons. We stayed in a very nice Airbnb close to the Chabad. If you are visiting Japan and want a place close to the Chabad to stay, feel free to DM me (I'd rather not post more info about a family-run Aribnb to a public forum).

Tourist Tips and Cultural Observations

The discount bus between Narita airport and Tokyo station is really great. We took the NEX from the airport but lost our paper return tickets during the trip so ended up taking the bus back. It was about as comfortable, much cheaper, and only a little bit slower.
Though most of the COVID restrictions have been lifted, masking is still very common in Japan, especially in busy urban areas. I'd estimate about 80% of the locals were wearing masks on public transit in Tokyo. In less crowded areas, fewer people are wearing masks, though a notable minority definitely still are.
Public transit in in Japan is a real wonder to behold. It is extremely efficient, was almost never late, with a very different etiquette from in the West. Very orderly lines form at the marked spots where the train doors will be when the train stops. On the train itself, people are very quiet, with the only exception being some soft conversation between friends and the occasional group of rowdy foreigners.
Google Maps worked great for us in terms of navigating public transit, though moreso in Tokyo than in Osaka, which seems to have a slightly more confusing train system.
Navigating Kyoto is a bit harder since the train system isn't quite as extensive there. IC cards will work on the buses, though we were a bit thrown off by the fact that everyone enters through the back door of the bus and exits through the front door. You pay the bus fare as you leave the bus and not as you get on. Friends of ours recommended renting bikes in Kyoto if the weather is nice, and while we didn't end up doing it, it's probably not a bad suggestion.
Were were told that the Arashiyama bamboo forest would be packed if we got there too late, but this wasn't the case for us. We got there around 10:00-10:30 and while there were plenty of people, it didn't feel overly crowded. Could be a different story during busier times, but this was our experience.
We took the Tokaido Shinkansen and it's a very cool and comfortable way to travel. We ordered our tickets online and were able to link them to our IC cards. There seemed to still be enough of seats available when we booked, though if you're looking for a specific seat (such as the ones with the extra baggage area) you should probably book as much in advance as in practical since a lot of the seats were taken even a few days in advance.
A lot of people on this forum emphasize how few Japanese people speak fluent English and it's definitely true! I expected as least the staff at hotels to speak some English, but very many did not. I was also surprised that when interfacing with a member of the hotel staff who didn't speak English, they never called over a colleague to translate or take over. I know a handful of Japanese words and phrases, and combining those with gestures and Google Translate generally worked well enough. On the rare occasion I tried to say anything a little more complex, people seemed really pleased and encouraging, even though I’m pretty sure I was butchering the language.
Although most people in Japan don't speak English, signage and automated announcements on public transit and the like generally do have English translations.
The public bathrooms in Japan are very common and almost always super clean (even the less clean ones are still cleaner than the average public bathroom in the U.S.). Not sure if this is due to COVID or not, but paper towels are virtually nonexistent and hand dryers are rare. Luckily, small hand towels are sold all over and the themed ones make great souvenirs.
Pretty much every Western-style toilet is equipped with a bidet. The Japanese-style toilets didn't seem to exist much in Tokyo. We saw a few in Kyoto in Osaka, but neither of us were brave enough to actually try using one...
The fruits and vegetables sold in Japanese grocery stores are all beautiful, pristine and usually taste pretty good too. Some of the more “exotic” fruit can be pretty expensive though (I saw a single mango being sold for nearly 3,000 yen!). The individual wrapping of everything definitely didn’t seem too environmentally friendly, but it did keep all the produce super clean.
I loved seeing the Gachopon machines everywhere and got quite a few souvenirs from them. There are some stores dedicated to the machines, but you can also find them in train stations and just about everywhere else.
Takyubin is super convenient! We took our luggage with us to and from the airport, but used takyubin to get it between our hotels. It's a great service and well-worth the money. There are a lot of coin lockers in Japan and they work fine for backpacks and carry-on suitcases, but if you're lugging around anything larger than that on the trains, you're going to feel pretty silly. Trust me, and use takyubin.
A tip: If using booking.com (or another site that offers it), print out your hotel reservations in Japanese and bring the paper copies with you. We used these print outs multiple times when checking in, telling cabs where to go, and showing hotel staff where to send our bags next with takyubin.

Hotel Reviews

Hotel Monterey Akasaka: Friendly staff, clean and nice rooms. Location is just fine, but in return it's cheaper than similar quality hotels in more popular neighborhoods while still being fairly central and accessible.
Kasuitei Ooya (Kawaguchiko): Out first ryokan of the trip and really nice. Great views and excellent onsen.
Hilton Tokyo Bay: Cheaper than all of the "official" Disney hotels, but just as close to the parks as many of them. The rooms are nice and spacious. Can definitely recommend.
Yuno Yado Shoei (Kyoto): Our second ryokan and not quite as nice as the first, but still really enjoyable. The onsen were great here too.
Liber Hotel at USJ: Far fancier than we thought it would be based on the price tag and the fact that it's a theme park hotel. The rooms are smaller than the Tokyo Bay Hilton's were, but the facilities were quite nice. Enjoyed my last onsen of the trip in this hotel.

Trip Highlights

Harajuku: We went to Harajuku more for my wife who is into fashion, but I really enjoyed it too! Lots of really cute stores and it's also fun seeing people dressed up in some really bold and unique outfits.
Lake Kawaguchiko and the Shibazakura Festival: We were fortunate to have amazing weather while we were in Lake Kawaguchiko and the views of both the lake and Fuji-san were spectacular. The Shibazakura festival specifically provided some really breathtaking views. This was probably our favorite part of the whole trip.
Tokyo Disney (Disneysea): As a huge Disney fan, I loved seeing the Japanese take on Disney parks. Lots of familiar rides, but lots of unique ones as well. The evening show on the water at DisneySea ("Believe: Sea of Dreams") was particularly fantastic.
Higashiyama and Gion: The most amazing area in Kyoto. I regret that the we didn't budget more time to spend here. You could definitely spend at least a full day wandering around soaking in the atmosphere and unique architecture.
Universal Studios Japan: As a theme park fan, USJ was a real treat. Super Nintendo World was definitely the highlight, but the entire park was fantastic. I might make a post just dedicated to giving some tips for the theme parks at some point.

Slight Disappointments
We enjoyed everything we did in Japan, but I'll just point out two things that didn't quite live up to expectations.

Akihabara: I'm an anime and video game nerd, so I thought Akihabara would be my heaven, but it was just okay. The arcades were really amazing to walk through and it was fun browsing the video game and figurine stores too, but something about it didn't quite live up to what I had imagined. Maybe just blame it on high expectations?
Teamlab Planets: This was definitely a cool and unique experience, but it didn't quite live up to the hype. It felt like the most touristy thing we did in Japan (even moreso than the Tokyo Disney somehow). The exhibits themselves are very cool, but the all the amateur Instagram models posing everywhere kind of ruined the vibe. Really enjoyable, but can definitely be skipped if you're on the fence.

I struggled to list any disappointments whatsoever. We had a really amazing time overall. Not sure when we’ll have a chance to go back, but I hope we get to one day!

Motivation

I (43F) registered in late 2022 to scare me into running regularly. I am not a person who will maintain exercise just because of the vast benefits to my mental and physical health, haha. At this point, I had run a couple of 5k’s and a HM, but I had not been running much in the prior year. I have no running background; I started in the pandemic. I had never run a full mile before age 40.

Training

I began training in late December using the Hal Higdon novice 1 plan. I did not like it. I felt like I plateaued a few weeks in and was not seeing any improvements. I was struggling to recover after long runs, and I developed a muscle strain early on. Granted, this may be because I did not have any running base – but I made the somewhat counter-intuitive decision to switch to Hanson beginner plan about 14 weeks out, increasing to 6 days per week of running. I was shocked this worked as well as it did, given my inexperience and base running fitness. I had made the classic mistake of running every Higdon run at a moderate pace, and I liked that Hanson gave me the exact pacing ranges to shoot for on every run (given my HM time and goal FM time). I had to really work on slowing down, a lot, for the easy runs – it felt almost comically slow, but varying pace like this is what improved both my running economy and my mental feel for pacing. It turns out my body loves active recovery, so running 6 days a week helped me avoid injury and feel very limber throughout the training. I improved speed and endurance rapidly on this plan; I was truly astonished. I believe you are not supposed to run races during Hanson plans, but I ran two HM during this cycle, one in early January and one in April. Despite running the April one as a training run (ie, not racing it) I shaved 15 minutes off my time (2:15 to 2:00). As a mother of young kids with a full-time and busy career, I worried about being able to fit in all the runs – but again, I give the edge to Hanson here over Higdon. I liked spreading the miles out over the week and not giving over the whole weekend to a long run and exhaustion. I never ran more than about two and a half hours for any run, including the longest 16-mile runs. I got into a routine of both early morning and evening runs, and it worked well for me. I grew to love my Wednesday 4:30am tempo runs; I felt great on those days, and these runs really gave me the most confidence about the marathon. I definitely did feel the cumulative fatigue but overall I felt physically and mentally very good throughout training - until the taper. I developed a mild quad strain, and because Hanson taper is short I was worried about not having enough time to heal. I took 4 days off running, used massage gun, and had professional massage. I also experienced the mental side of “taper tantrums” and had a couple of panic attacks, which was unnerving.

Pre-race

I felt awful the week before the race. My entire left leg hurt, not just the quad, and I was sluggish and anxious simultaneously. I could no longer hit any of my prescribed paces, and my gait was unstable, so I just ran shorter and even easier runs. I started to believe I would not be able to run the race. Sure enough, though, about 2 days prior to the race my energy returned and my leg felt better. I got to the start line with no pain. I was still feeling fearful and thought that perhaps I shouldn’t shoot for my goal of 4:30, so I hung back around the 4:50 pacers at the start. In terms of nutrition – I hydrated aggressively and carb loaded the week before the race, and the morning of the race I woke up at 3:30 to eat oatmeal and (who was I kidding) tried to go back to sleep. I eventually got up, dressed, did all the usual pre-run niceties, did a quick massage gun warmup, and walked 5 minutes to the starting line from my hotel. I ate a Gu 15 minutes prior to the race start (6:30) and hit the port-a-potty.

Race

It was a beautiful day dawning at the start line in downtown Buffalo – 55F and no clouds or wind. The energy was great. I ran with the 4:50 pacers for about the first mile, and then I started to push ahead. I had to pee almost immediately, but there were long lines at the first couple of stops. I eventually just stopped at mile 6 and waited. I had to stop to pee multiple times on the course – I guess I was well-hydrated. I drank water at every stop, and on the back half I took a second cup to dump over my head. I ate gels at miles 2, 6, 10, 14, 18, and 22 – although I had practiced this timing, I had maxed out at 2-3 gels in the training runs. However, I had no GI upset. My only “wall” was small, and mental, at about miles 8-10. Doubt crept in and I wondered whether I could finish, though physically I felt fine. Many people had told me the back half was “tough” and lonely and that seeing the HM runners peel off was demoralizing. Frankly, I loved the back half more, wending through parks and neighborhoods; everyone was sitting in their yards offering water and snacks and encouragement and sprinklers (it was getting pretty hot). I was fully expecting the physical wall – but it never came. I felt exhilarated as I pushed beyond my longest long run and into the unknown. I saw my family at miles 17 and 21 which definitely helped. I started pushing a little faster when I hit mile 20 based on how good I felt. There was a long uphill in miles 23-24 which I had perseverated on pre-race but which I did not notice, and then I made my last turn onto the downhill straightaway finish back into downtown. I started crying, and running faster, and singing. The spectators were fantastic, and your name is printed on your bib so I was hearing strangers cheering me throughout the race and even more so in the last mile. I set my mile PR in the last mile of the race per Strava (which measured 26.5 miles with the last mile in 7:34).

Post-race

I felt great at the finish. I did not empty the tank which makes me feel very encouraged for future attempts! I ate and drank, met with some friends at the post-race party for hugs and high-fives, and then went back to the hotel with my family. I ate a big meal and then snuggled with my 5yo watching movies for the afternoon. It is now the next morning post-race and I am a bit sore but walking normally and no signs of muscle strain.
I am so, so proud of myself and this race could not have gone any better. I am hooked, so this is not one and done for me. I am already eyeing an October marathon in my hometown. I wrote this to look back on and also in the hopes that it helps another late beginner like myself.

Hello! I am hoping for all of your reassuring stories. Did anyone spend significant time outdoors in 85+ degree weather early in their first trimester?? I recently found out I was pregnant and temps are already close to 90 where I live. I spend a lot of time outside at playgrounds etc. with my toddler. I have been reading about the many negative effects and studies linking outside temperature to birth defects in early pregnancy (I know things like hot tubs etc are the most linked but there are still some studies you can find online linking outside heat to defects as well). I am hoping others have experiences that will ease my mind. I tend to overthink and get overly anxious so hoping I am just overreacting here.

2023.05.29 14:16 Vigorize My (25M) girlfriend (24F) hung out with guy friend that she used to have a thing with before other sketchy things drunk

Hey all, looking to get advice from others on a situation that happened about 2 months ago thats been weighing on my mind heavily especially after finding out new stuff. So about 2 months ago I was at work on a night shift, and my girlfriend went out with one of her close friends. I have never been shown any jealousy or ever been the type to shut down anybody doing anything ever as I see that as controlling. Anyways so they go to a guys house for a small party and then head to different guys house (just my gf, her friend, and the guy) at this point im sure theyre pretty drunk. Again, I think nothing of it. They didn’t stay there for very long. My girlfriend says that her friend and the guy had a thing and they were there hanging out. She says nothing happened and it was really awkward and boring so they left. (Quick note, I just found out this “guy” was a guy that my girlfriend had actually hooked up with in the past from her old work place but up until yesterday I had no idea and had assumed he was just a friend). They went downtown met up with some friends etc etc night goes on. She then goes to another guys house and her communication gets shorter and shorter. She went in this guys hot tub naked with her friend and she claims that her and her friend “made out” naked in this hot tub while he was also naked. Her phone had “died” while she was there as well and an hour or so later she had it charged when she got home. Not to share too many details 2 weeks after this whole night happened she had contracted an STD which yes, is possible it had laid dormant and only then popped up from stress from school, but she swears that nothing had happened that night. She had recently kept in touch and snapchatted a guy she had been fucking months ago the first month we were in a relationship as well, until I said I wasnt comfortable with it and she had ended things instantly there no questions asked. I’m coming to reddit for advice as I cant seem to get any of this off of my mind as she has since then been great and super apologetic and hasn’t really shown any signs of cheating. Is this something I should be able to get over or is this extremely blatant that something had happened that night and I am being naive to the whole situation? TIA to everybody that shares their opinion.

2023.05.29 14:13 Thehealthygamer One week in Thailand, photos and thoughts.

This is the beginning of a 3+ month trip to SEA. I was apprehensive as I haven't done any long overseas trips but so far it's been super easy and smooth! So if you're on the fence, just do it! Thailand is very easy to navigate for English speakers and with smart phones now it's dead smooth to get around and find accommodations, etc.
Photo 1: China Town. Stayed on a river front little hotel for $20/night and wandered the markets. Ate soo much good food. Favorite was grandma Noi's duck noodles, 70 baht a bowl!

Photo 6-15: Various temples in and around Ayutthaya. We took a train up here from Bangkok, 2 hours, 15 baht each. Stayed at a guest house on the river for 650baht/night. Ate a ton of street food from the vendors at the various markets. My favorite were the boat noodles, seafood omlettes, and rotti.
One thing that made me apprehensive was a lot of the negative things I read online in researching Thailand. I haven't found any of the negative things listed in reviews to be bothersome. I think it's all about expectations. For example our first hotel, it was $20/night and lots of complaints online, like sure, it's not amazing and it's run down but you're paying $20/night! Don't expect a 5 star resort for that price.
The canals will be smelly, there will be traffic, there will be trash, there are stray dogs, yes it is hot. But that's just part of the experience. We've had an incredible time.
All this is to say don't let what you read online turn you off! This has been some of the smoothest and most enjoyable traveling I've ever done. The thai people are so kind! Just learning to say Sawati krap and kap kun krap goes a long way.
We've just been winging it as we go. Using Google and agoda to find places to stay. Grab app to get places if it's far but mostly walking around if it's under 3km. Discovered a ton of really cool alleyways and local spots that way. Point to the food you want. Lots of vendors speak a little English too.
We found the best food just walking around at the street markets and seeing what was popular with the locals. Our worst meals have been in the more expensive(relatively) touristy restaurants.
As far as budget goes I was a bit worried about thailand being more expensive now but every room we've booked so far has been under $20, all private rooms non hostels with A/C. Food has been $10-20 a day just eating everything we want from street vendors. Walking around a lot saves money on transportation. The most expensive thing so far has been bjj and muay thai training. Got our asses kicked at a gym in Ayuttha, training in 100 degree thailand heat is something else!!

I know this is not a new theory by any means, but this is why I think a Tom squared + Rachel three some is the "big" revelation: Katie. Katie will currently (reluctantly) film with Schwartz. If she finds out about a devil's threesome, I think she will refuse to film with him. If she does, likely Lala will follow suit and Ariana could likely refuse to film with him regardless of this information, so this info will set her off the edge as the night we could speculate this happened was hot tub night. That would mean Scheana would follow suit. So unless Jax and Brittany come back, there will be no girl in the group willing to film with either of the side car boys. The only person that would film with Sandoval would be Schwartz. Basically what I am saying is currently, Katie's willingness to film to Schwartz is what is keeping the show alive for next season. Without that, there is no bridge between the Tom's and the rest of the cast. But man, if this is the information, I cannot see a scenario where IF any of the rest of the cast does decide to film with either Tom, it could be anything other than a massive blow up (Katie, Ari, James, Lala, Scheana) will absolutely torch them.

"My understanding Michael Jackson is a party (to the contract)," Gongaware said about Dr. Murray's contract. Gongaware told jury he's never looked at Conrad Murray's contract to serve as Michael Jackson's tour doctor
Panish: "Why did AEG have to enter into a contract with Dr. Murray?"

Gongaware: "I don't know about AEG terminating Dr. Murray"

Gongaware said he didn't believe they could do it, because he was Michael's doctor. Gongaware said it was fair to say he didn't know why AEG would enter into a contract with a doctor for Michael Jackson. Panish asked Gongaware if Michael negotiated the price/contract with Dr. Murray.

"I believe he did through me, he instructed me what to offer"

Gongaware said he didn't know for sure whether Karen Faye was an independent contractor or not.

"Dr. Murray would've been 100% charged to Michael Jackson," Gongaware testified.

Gongaware said he didn't know what the $300k budgeted for medical management was for.
Panish tried 'impeaching' Gongaware, which is the process of calling into question the credibility of an individual who's testifying. Yesterday and today the plaintiffs' attorney would ask a question then play parts of the deposition to catch Gongaware in contradiction.
At one point, a portion of Gongaware's deposition was played in which he discussed a meeting at Michael's house with Conrad Murray. In his deposition, Paul Gongaware said the meeting "was about Dr. Murray and engaging him"; Gongaware later changed testimony to state "him" meant MJ. That change was read to the jury, leading attorney Brian Panish to question Gongaware about what he meant by the word "engage". "Here I think we were talking about making sure Michael Jackson was engaged and focused", Gongaware said. He told the jury he was concerned about getting Michael involved and focused, engaged mentally. "I believe that was Kenny's concern, that he wanted him to be focused," Gongaware explained. "Michael had gone before without rehearsing", Gongaware recalled. "When he got to London, he was going to be sensational." Gongaware said he thought at the meeting they discussed Jackson's nutrition, not his health (i.e. sleep issues.)
Panish asked Gongaware about another meeting at Jackson's house in which Michael showed up late after a visit to Dr. Arnold Klein. "I didn't know what he was under the influence of, but he was a little bit off", Gongaware said of the meeting adding that he didn't know what kind of drugs Dr. Klein was giving Michael
Panish then asked Gongaware whether he was involved in getting Jackson a nutritionist. Lots of back-and-forth on this issue. Panish showed emails in which Gongaware emailed others at AEG telling them Jackson needed a nutritionist and physical therapist. "Obviously I was looking for a nutritionist for him, but I wasn't involved in his nutrition," Gongaware said. Panish played Gongaware's deposition where he said he was not involved in finding a nutritional person. Gongaware explained he believes nutritional person and nutritionist were not necessarily the same.
On June 15, 2009, Gongaware sent an email to Ortega in response to request for nutritionist and physical therapist for Michael . Email:
We're on it. AEG owns major sports teams in this market so we think we can find the right people quickly. Kenny responded: Super.Not a minute too soon. Let's turn this guy around!
Panish then asked Gongaware about a friend of AEG CEO Randy Phillips who was going to work with Jackson. Gongaware said he didn't know whether this friend of Phillips was a nutrition specialist. He told Panish he'd have to ask Randy Phillips. Gongaware testified he remembers someone named David Laughner working with Michael. Panish pointed out Laughner is Randy Phillips' friend. "I don't know if he was a nutritionist, it was someone in charge of making Michael eat," Gongaware explained.

Gongaware: "He's a guy who's dealt with artists quite a bit"
Panish: "Artists in trouble?"
Gongaware: "Artists in general"

Gongaware said he doesn't know what Laughner did, but he's seen him working with JLo and Enrique Iglesias.
Gongaware didn't know why MJ would need a nutritionist when he had a doctor hired. "Kenny asked for it," Gongaware explained. Gongaware said he told Dr. Murray he wanted him to have everything he needed. He said Michael Jackson had always been thin
Gongaware said he didn't attend rehearsals frequently.

"I was at the rehearsal facility at all the times but I wasn't in the arena much."

"We were always concerned about Michael's health and well being," Gongaware explained, saying he was responding to Kenny Ortega's requests. Gongaware said Kenny Ortega was responsible for keeping an eye on everything, including Michael and his health. Gongaware was then asked whether there was anyone responsible for handling AEG's interests at rehearsals. Gongaware responded "Yes, that was Kenny Ortega"

Panish: "Do you think Ortega was overreacting?"
Gongaware: "Perhaps. I was never concerned about Michael Jackson. I knew when the houselights went off, he would be there and on."
Panish: "You think Ortega was overreacting when raised concerns about Michael's health?" Gongaware: "I think I wasn't concerned as he was"

Talking about the email Gongaware wrote saying he wanted to remind him (Dr. Murray) that it's AEG, not Michael, who's paying his salary. In his deposition, Gongaware said he didn't know what he meant to say in the email. Gongaware testified he spent some of the time himself looking at this email, putting it in context with the rest of the material he had.

Panish: "After meeting with your lawyers and talking about an hour or two about this email, did you refresh your memory of what you meant?"
"I did come to conclusions a lot on my own, then I discussed it with my attorneys," Gongaware explained
Panish: "You didn't have psychotherapy to refresh your recollection?"
Gongaware: "No, I still don't recall writing it"

Panish played for jurors a section of Gongaware's deposition, recorded in December, in which Jackson lawyer Kevin Boyle questioned him about what he meant when he wrote to Ortega:

"We want to remind him that it is AEG, not Michael, who is paying his salary."

Boyle: "Based on the assumptions that AEG is your company and Michael is Michael Jackson, do you have an understanding of what that means?"
Gongaware: "No, I don't understand it, because we weren't paying his salary"
Boyle: "So why would you write that?"
Gongaware: "I have no idea"
Boyle: "Now, let's go on to the next sentence. When you say 'his salary,' who are you talking about?"
Gongaware: "I don't know."
Boyle: "Oh, but how do you know you weren't paying his salary if you don't know who we're talking about?"
Gongaware: "I don't remember this e-mail"
Boyle: "Didn't you just testify that 'we weren't paying his salary'?"
Gongaware: "AEG?"
Boyle: "Yes.You just testified 'we weren't paying his salary.' You just testified to that a few seconds ago, right?"
Gongaware: "I guess"
Boyle: "Well, whose salary were you referring to? Dr. Murray?"
Gongaware: "Yes."

After Gongaware began recalling in court what he meant in the e-mail, Panish suggested it may be a case of "repressed memories" where "someone doesn't remember something for three or four years."

"You didn't have any psychotherapy to remember what you wrote here?" Panish asked. "You didn't like get put to sleep? (Judge Yvette Palazuelos injected: "Hypnotized?") to see if you remembered this?
"No," Gongaware answered

Panish went through every word of the email, which was to Kenny Ortega and Frank DiLeo:

Frank and I have discussed it already and have requested a face-to-face meeting with the doctor, hopefully Monday. We want to remind him that it is AEG, not Michael, who's paying his salary. We want him to understand what's expected of him. He's been dodging Frank so far

Panish: "You're referring to Dr. Murray and what's expected of Dr. Murray, right?"
Gongaware: "Yes, we did talk about Dr. Murray's salary, but a deal was never consummated. His responsibility was to take care of his patient"

Panish asked if he thought Dr. Murray knew what his responsibility was, so why the need to remind him what was expected of him?

"This thing was shorthand between me, Kenny and Frank. I was going through hundreds of emails a day. If I knew lawyers four years later were picking everything apart, I may have been more careful choosing my words", Gongaware testified.

He claimed he was referring to Kenny's email regarding nutritionist, physical therapist.

"I certainly feel Dr. Murray should be competent to do that (be a nutritionist). He's a doctor!" Gongaware testified.

Panish asked why Gongaware thought they needed a nutritionist when they had a doctor hired.

"Kenny asked for one," he responded

"If Michael signed the contract and if Michael would've instructed us to pay him, we would've pay him," Gongaware said about Dr. Murray

"Frank and I have discussed it already and have requested a face-to-face meeting with the doctor, hopefully Monday

AEG Live co-CEO Paul Gongaware wrote on June 14, 2009, 11 days before Murray administered a fatal dose propofol

"Michael didn't like to rehearse, it didn't surprise me," Gongaware expressed, saying it was known that Michael didn't go to rehearsals. But when the lights went up, Jackson was "on," he stated.

It was not an admission that he was concerned about Jackson's ability to do the show, he said. "It was just playing around, joking," with AEG President Tim Leiweke's assistant, Carla Garcia, he testified.

"Carla is an absolute babe and I was just chatting her up. I don't have cold sweats, I don't have nightmares, I sleep great!" Gongaware said.

Panish asked him if he was lying in the email, "white lie?"
Gongaware: "Let's just say I was joking"
Panish: "You ask people to pray for you joking?"
Gongaware: "I did there"

MJ came out and watched all the pyro demonstrations and endorsed the all the effects then went into his room and asked Kenny "you aren't going to kill the artist, are you?" We assumed this was reference to pyro, but Kenny said he was shaking and couldn't hold his knife and fork. Kenny had to cut his food for him before he could eat, and then had to use his fingers. I don't know how much embellishment there is to this, but (Kenny) said repeatedly that Michael was in no shape to go on stage. He kept going on and on how no one was taking responsibility for "getting him ready". We might be getting beyond ... damage control, here

"I didn't worry about, it sounded like he was sick and they were going to talk about it next morning," Gongaware explained
Phillips replied:

Tim and I are going to see him tomorrow, however, I am not sure what the problem is. Chemical or physiological?

Gongaware said he was at a family wedding and wasn't really paying attention to this. This was 1st time he heard something was wrong with Michael

Take the doctor with you. Why wasn't he there last night?

"Yes, if he (MJ) was sick, why wasn't he (the doctor) there?" Gongaware said he meant in the email

He is not a psychiatrist so I'm not sure how effective he can be at this point. Obviously, getting him there is not the issue. It is much deeper.

"I think Randy is stating his opinion," Gongaware said.

Gongaware: "Well, there was going to be a meeting that day to discuss it"

Panish:"And never sought to find out?"

He told the jury that he was concerned about Jackson's health, but that he thought This Is It tour director Kenny Ortega may have been overstating concerns about the singer's wellbeing. Gongaware agreed that in this business, the show must go on
Gongaware testified he didn't know when Dr. Murray's contract was to begin. "That contract was for London and the shows for London, I believe," Gongaware said.

The artist's health is paramount. Without the artist, there's no show. The artist is the most important thing," Gongaware testified

There was a meeting that was going to happen the next day, Gongaware said, and he waited to see what would come out of it

Let's set up a time for you and I to meet with him. I want Kenny in the meeting as well

Ortega wrote back:

I will do whatever I can to be of help with this situation. My concern is now that we've brought the Doctor into the fold played the tough love .He appeared quite weak and fatigued this evening. He had a terrible case of the chills, was trembling, rambling and obsessing. Everything in me says he should be psychologically evaluated. If we have any chance at all to get him back in the light it's going to take a strong therapist to help him through this as well as immediate physical nurturing. I was told by our choreographer during the artists costume fitting w/ his designer tonight they noticed he's lost more weight.: As far as I can tell, there's no 1 taking responsibility (caring) for him on a daily basis. Where was his assistant tonight? Tonight I was feeding him wrapping him in blankets to warm his chill, massaging his feet to calm him and calling his doctor. There were four security guards outside his door, but no one offering him a cup of hot tea. Finally, it's important for everyone to know I believe he really wants this. It would shatter him break his heart if we pulled plug. He's terribly frightened it's all going to go away. He asked me repeatedly tonight if i was going to leave him. He was practically begging for my confidence. It broke my heart. He was like a lost boy. There still may be a chance he can rise to the occasion if we get him the help he needs.

Phillips responded:

Kenny: I will call you when I figure this out,we have a person like that, Brigitte, who's in London advancing his stay. We will bring her back asap and Frank, too, however, I'm stymied on who to bring in as a therapist and how they can get through to him in such a short time

Gongaware said Brigitte is a lawyer who was in charge of accommodations for MJ in London

Gongaware: "He was obviously concerned"
Panish: "Seriously concerned, right sir?"
Gongaware: "Seemed to be"

"This all happened prior to the meeting, and I was waiting to understand what the situation was," Gongaware explained
"I think they are special," Gongaware said about artists.
Email response from Philips to Kenny urging him, and everyone else, not to become amateur psychiatrists or physicians on 6/20/09:

You cannot imagine the harm and ramifications of stopping this show now

Panish: "Can you name a single person at AEG who checked Dr. Murray out?"
Gongaware: "I don't know if anyone did. I didn't know anything about him. Some people work for reasons other than money," Gongaware opined, but said he didn't know whether Dr. Murray was in that category. "I believe every doctor is unbiased and ethical," Gongaware said. "I think it's a natural assumption on my part."

Gongaware: "I never checked any doctor that I used. I just go by recommendation, never checked anyone's financial situation"
Gongaware said everyone thought Michael had all the money in the world, and it was not unusual for him to see people asking for a lot of money. Gongaware said he never heard before today anything about Dr. Murray's financial conditions

Panish: "He knew Michael's health was declining based on what the doctor told him, right?"
Gongaware: "Based on what his doctor told him, yes"
"I did talk to him and he said the meeting went well," Gongaware recalled

Further to the earlier email Let's keep our two docu people out of here today, unless they stay in the dressing room area only. Tomorrow is another story...

Panish: "Sir, Michael was sick this time, wasn't he?"
Gongaware: "I don't know, he showed up the next day and was great!"
Panish: "But you were not at the rehearsal, sir?" Gongaware: "I saw reports"

Panish then asked Gongaware about his attendance at Jackson's rehearsals. Gongaware said he didn't attend many. He watched Jackson perform "Thriller" two days before he died, but that was the only time he spent at that rehearsal.

"He appeared to me to be fully engaged. I recall seeing "Thriller" because it was the first time they were rehearsing with the costume and I wanted to see it," Gongaware said

I experienced a very vivid life recall. … It was both painful and exquisitely beautiful. It was like viewing a film, filled with precise detail. Every single thought, word, deed, decision, and action was brought forth and re-experienced and re-examined. It was self-evaluation, with total transparency and honesty. Throughout, I was never judged by any of these divine beings. They simply held me in [l]ove, with complete compassion and acceptance. … In this review, I realized that I was every single person I’d ever encountered or thought of. As I merged with and became them, I felt exactly what they experienced as a result of my loving or unloving thoughts and actions. These three pure Beings spoke to me in a different language. They used my thoughts but it was different than thoughts. They reminded me that I had chosen to be incarnate on Earth and that I had to go back. I already knew that by being by their side, everything was coming back to me. They gave me so much love. I look down and I see myself standing in a very gentle river, and all around me is a very beautiful, very peaceful forest.
