9 / 10 System Shock Remake might not be without flaws, but remaking one of the greatest games ever made after almost 3 decades was never an easy task to start with. Nevertheless, the Remake is solid enough to give the new generation of gamers a taste of one of the pioneers of the video games industry.
WayTooManyGames - Kyle Nicol - 8.5 / 10
For those who are huge fans of the original release, I am sure that this will be highly regarded as a fantastic remake. But this is more than that: for those new to the franchise, this is also a great point to step in at. Nightdive’s System Shock remake is one that will appeal to both audiences. The core gameplay mechanics may not the best or most polished, but it’s the world design, atmosphere and engaging plot that make for an experience that is still very much unique, and well worth the gigantic wait.
Everyeye.it - Riccardo Cantù - Italian - 8 / 10
System Shock's remake is a love letter to the original and its fans, but also an opportunity for new fans to rediscover an authentic video game classic.
PC Gamer - Joshua Wolens - 80 / 100
It might be a little conservative, but this is a smart, faithful remake and easily the de facto way to play System Shock in the modern era.
Screen Rant - Jason Hon - 4 / 5
Nightdive Studios' System Shock remake is the definitive version of the classic 90s PC title whose influence is still felt in today's sci-fi shooters.
Shacknews - TJ Denzer - 8 / 10
Nightdive’s System Shock remake keeps much of its successful elements intact while doing away with a lot of its archaic issues that would drag down a modern game.
VG247 - Siobhán Casey - 4 / 5
Nightdive Studios may have taken seven years, but it's finally managed to do the impossible and thread the unlikely line between reboot and remake.
Worth Playing - Chris "Atom" DeAngelus - 8 / 10
System Shock Remake is a solid remake of an exceptional game. It doesn't quite reach the levels of modernization that you might see from something like Resident Evil 4 Remake, but it does a good job of adapting a classic without losing what made it a classic in the first place. It's a clever and creative game that deserves its place in gaming history, and the remake emphasizes that.
COGconnected - Mark Steighner - 78 / 100
While we wait for a genuine reboot, System Shock is worth playing as a reminder of how important great ideas were, and still are, to the hobby we love.
Spaziogames - Marcello Paolillo - Italian - 7.8 / 10
System Shock Remake is a solid sci-fi first person shooter, although it does not go beyond the boundaries drawn by the first and immortal chapter, released in 1994.
GameGrin - Violet Plata - 7.5 / 10
Unforgiving, with no tutorials, and a true-to-classic experience, System Shock is a retro survival horror title through and through, but you should still consider checking it out, even if you don't care for the original.
Press Start - Brodie Gibbons - 7.5 / 10
After three decades, System Shock still serves up a sci-fi banquet complete with one of the greatest antagonists and features that revolutionised a genre. Classic games are left open to classic stumbling blocks, however, as some of the design shows considerable depreciation.
CGMagazine - Andrew Farrell - 7 / 10
System Shock is an upgraded classic with dated elements that needs quality of life improvements, yet despite everything is still a fun treat for immersive sim fans.
GBAtemp - Prans Dunn - 7 / 10
While I won’t call the System Shock remake an instant classic or on par with other recent remakes such as Resident Evil 4 or Dead Space, it is a decent effort to bring a revered sci-fi title to a new audience.
Metro GameCentral - Steve Boxer - 7 / 10
Not the high-end remake that some fans would have been hoping for but even as a, at times, too faithful remaster this is a fascinating second look at one of gaming's great unsung heroes.
PCGamesN - Dave Irwin - 7 / 10
The System Shock remake is the best way to play the PC classic, making it an enjoyable first-person experience for the modern age. However, it still clings to some somewhat outdated mechanics that will frustrate newcomers.
TheSixthAxis - Steve C - 7 / 10
If you want to explore the history of the horror genre then this is the version to play, but you might want to bookmark a guide to avoid System Shock's most outdated elements.
Atomix - Alexis Patiño - Spanish - 68 / 100
System Shock is the remake fans have been waiting since 2015 and it succeeds in bringing back all that 90s PC gaming experience. Including the outdated feel in an era flooded with greater and more attractive games.
GamesRadar+ - Leon Hurley - 3 / 5
An oddly pitched remake that has its moments but adds very little to the original beyond a visual upgrade
Slant Magazine - Steven Scaife - 3 / 5
However commendable Nightdive’s efforts to preserve the spirit of the original may be, it doesn’t take much frustrated wandering before questioning whether their modernization efforts have gone far enough.
Checkpoint Gaming - Tom Quirk - 5.5 / 10
Nightdive's System Shock remake is a strange game, and whether it will appeal to you may largely depend on your nostalgia for the era of gaming from which it came. This remake still shows its age, despite the considerable and impressive paint job, lighting, and updated controls. If you don't mind the sometimes murderous level of difficulty, tons of backtracking, and minimal handholding, System Shock may be a compelling piece of gaming history that is worth checking out.
WellPlayed - Nathan Hennessy - 5.5 / 10
The atmospheric visual overhaul marks the best part of this exhausting and dated remake, while the villainous AI SHODAN remains a timeless antagonist.
ACG - Jeremy Penter - Buy
Video Review - Quote not available
Polygon - Gita Jackson - Unscored
It’s easy to understand why people played this game and then became obsessed with it, why you can trace some people’s careers through the game.
Rock, Paper, Shotgun - Jeremy Peel - Unscored
While its refusal to let you cheat the exam will prove too punishing for some, the new System Shock is a breathtakingly beautiful and astonishingly faithful remake that proves the enduring power of Looking Glass design.

2023.05.29 16:37 No-Assistance6054 Leaving teaching for the workforce has reignited my interest in teaching Business English
Hi! I’m a former English as a Second/New/Additional Language teacher, with experience ranging from Cambly lessons, to semester courses and summer camps in Europe, to 5 school years of teaching immigrants and refugees in American high schools. I have a Masters in TESOL, a Bachelors degree in Business, and two New York State teaching certifications (TESOL and Business & Marketing). I stopped teaching right before the pandemic, when I received an opportunity to work for a multinational localization company. I’ve been there almost 3.5 years and work in a senior management position.
I’m a remote worker, but my husband is not, so I’m really only open to in-person overseas opportunities on a short-term basis (preferably a month or less). Online opportunities are obviously more preferable (yes I have posted this to
online_tefl as well).
I currently work with people from all over the world and have many opportunities to train teammates. I also see firsthand the common issues that non-native speakers have in an English-speaking work environment and sometimes think about getting back in to Business English. From time to time, I jot down ideas for lesson plans or videos and think about how I could go about creating or sharing content. My goal is not necessarily to make a ton of money (although I won’t say no to someone wanting to pay me), but to share my knowledge and help people become better communicators in the workplace.
With the TEFL market as saturated as it is these days, what kind of role could I play? My ideas have ranged from creating a YouTube series, to creating an online course and selling it or working through it with students on an online teaching platform, to somehow finding a place to volunteer abroad a few times a year (not sure of logistics with something like that). I also know that sometimes teachers can be thrown into subjects they’re not totally prepared to teach, so happy to consult if anyone ever needs it.
Thanks!

2023.05.29 16:36 ytsorFx All Purpose Bread Dough
Recently made a sourdough starter and the love affair of sourdough begins.
I've also branched out into other things such as sourdough discard donuts which the kids loved helping me with and turned out a treat.
I'm looking for a general bread dough I can make that is suitable for things like a bacon and cheese twist that's similar to the one found at Costco. My son loves it but it's too expensive to keep buying.
I found a recipe on YouTube but it was way too sweet. It had like 50g of sugar and wasn't very nice.
If anyone could point me in the right direction that would be awesome.
TIA 😁

2023.05.29 16:35 Helena_Markos looking for help developing a "healthy" understanding of drinking
Hello all!
Very happy to have found this resource. My therapist introduced me to the concept of ACOA.
I grew up with an alcoholic mother; she wasn't in the gutter, and she didn't drink every day; in fact, she drank somewhat infrequently. But when she did drink, it was a 0 to 60, flip of a switch turn from the normal mother I felt supported and loved by, to a completely dysfunctional depressive alcoholic.
I recall times where she'd stumble around and pass out on the floor; me having no concept of "blacking out," thinking she was dead. She'd drive drunk and pick me up from after school jobs. She would bring men over and go into the bedroom with them.
After witnessing this behavior, I knew that I never wanted to drink, because I had seen how destructive it can be. I was able to be around friends and family while they drank, but I abstained and managed to keep a level head about the whole thing. As a younger person, none of my partners drank (largely because of simply being under the age), and I dated a girl from 19-29 that also didn't drink. I never had to contend with what it would be like for the most important person in my life to drink.
The girl I'm dating now drinks. We've been dating for four years, but a combination of COVID, and a year long stint long-distance seems to have given me the false impression that she very rarely drinks; now that we've been living together for the last year, I see every time she drinks. I do not consider her a heavy drinker, I consider her to be somewhere on the spectrum of a "normal drinker," whatever that means. Call me naive, but I didn't really realize that every time she hung out with her friends, they would drink. Not get drunk, but have a few drinks. I remember the first time I felt very triggered by her drinking was when we were getting ready to go to a Halloween party, and she said "I want to get drunk."
As someone who has seen the major negatives of drunkenness, I find the desire to be drunk completely unrelatable although, understandable.
I want to learn what a "healthy" relationship with alcohol looks like. My mother ingrained in my head that ANY alcohol = a complete and total loss of composure and identity. The result of this is that when my girlfriend has a simple glass of wine while watching a movie, I get very upset and distant. She feels shamed and judged, and it's majorly affecting our relationship.
I want to be more understanding of her. I don't want to break up just because I haven't been able to process my trauma and take back what my mother stole from me - an understanding of what a "healthy" adult relationship with alcohol looks like.
I am satisfied with my own personal decision not to drink, but when my family comes to town and want to go to a brewery, I want to not have a visceral reaction. I have been considering my girlfriend's drinking a bit of exposure therapy: she has a drink - oh, she's totally fine and just hanging out? But when the third drink comes out, or she's drank two glasses of wine a night for the third night in a row, I seem to exhaust my ability to cope and react.
I would LOVE any recommendations on books, Youtube videos, articles, ANYTHING that will help me learn that my mother's drinking is NOT what the vast majority of people who casually consume alcohol experience.
Thank you so much (:

I am playing Borderlands3 for the first time. I finished the main story and i reached the level cap. My ocd doesn't allow me to aim for lower than m10 but i am struggling and have some questions. I made a build for flak i saw on youtube and raised all the way up to M7, as I was getting destroyed in M10. However, the weaponds I am currently using are from M10. How can I even hope of reaching M10 if the drops I am getting aren't even usefull?has anyone been through this? Does anyone have any advice for me to reach M10/M11 and not die instantly?
Note: What i really wanted to do was reach M10/M11 and from then on, just grind to complete the side missions/dlc 100%

2023.05.29 16:34 AGunWithOneBullet [PC] [2014-ish] Get a brain or a heart for a Mannequin
I really don't remember much about it, however the stuff I do remember is distinct enough hopefully.
The date is when I saw the Video about it, not necessarily when it came out (But given Youtube trends back then, chances are high it did came out at that time)
I saw it from a popular Youtuber playing it. I don't remember who, maybe Markiplier?
First Person, 3D. It was a short game
You were in a very basic house where everything was white-gray colours. Or more like, the layout of a house. I don't remember any typical furniture, but stuff like stairs and windows.
You were with a Mannequin, maybe it was a robot instead?
You had to find either a heart or a brain for it, giving it one of the two would trigger an ending, with the brain one being bad and the heart one being good. (Or at least, thats what I remember the vibe to be, I dont think the game literally told you) Pretty sure you did some basic puzzles too.
I dont remember if the heart or brain were literal depictions, if they were stylized or looked completely like something else.
I think you would find keys to go to different rooms inside the house

2023.05.29 16:34 daylincooper How would you start over building a successful video business?
I’m 25 and have been making videos since I was 19 which started as YouTube projects with friends which now has gotten to the point where I’m in my first year of having a small video production company. I have great gear which most times have been unnecessary purchases but I won’t have a problem tackling jobs thanks to my A7S3 and FX6 combo. I moved to Alberta last winter and incorporated my business last fall and built a website and offered some free jobs to get videos in my portfolio. This year my best friend joined my video business as he has always been very skilled when we worked on videos together in the past. He took on the role of editing and DP and I have tried to take on the business side of things even though this is new to me but I am eager and ready to learn.
A few months ago we got approved on a grant with Telus and created our first episode out of four which has turned out better than expected and all feedback has been very positive. We are also meeting with our town to work on tourism video projects this week which should be a few bigger jobs for us ($2500-5000 CAD). Otherwise we have not gotten jobs and have reached out to a fair amount of places through cold emails. I am looking for suggestions on how to grow this business and gain clients as someone who is new to this area and while we are skilled in creating high quality projects, people don’t know that. We have recently joined the Edmonton chamber of commerce and will be working with another awesome video production company on the 16th to create a reel of the meet up event, we are doing it for free but the chamber will be promoting us.
I really want to grow my business and turn it into a career because I know we have the equipment and video skills but I need to improve my business skills. If you were to start your production company over again, what would you do to gain clients and start making yourself known in the area? What business advice would you say is most important to learn and are there any YouTube channels/books that can help? Any advice or feedback is really appreciated!

2023.05.29 16:32 Go_Rawr App for Audiobooks from Humble Bundle?
I just got some great audiobooks from a humble bundle, but I listen in my car. What app can I use these mp3 files with to easily listen and control over Android CarPlay? I normally just use Audible but you can't upload there (obvs) so I'm not sure of other options. Apps that will allow me to control without my phone while driving and that will save my spot if a chapter isn't finished would be ideal >.<
